Nightingale - I

Nightingale - I
Black Mark - 2000
By John Knudsen

I've always been a huge fan of Dan Swanö's projects. Also the two first Nightingale albums The Breathing Shadow (1995) and The Closing Chronicles (1996). So I expected something good when I heard Dan was recording a new album.

I think Dan's voice is really cool, even though he doesn't growl on this album, he's capable of singing with a lot of feeling. In some places he sounds a lot like Mikael Åkerfeldt from Opeth, but isn't that just positive? I certainly think so. Hear the opener "Scarred for life" where Dan's voice reach new heights, the sad, sad, sad song "Alonely" where Dan tries the best he can to sing with feelings (unfortunately this isn't his strongest side).

This album is too nice for me, it has some really good melodies, but I think it needs more "guts"! A good album to help those people who can't sleep though!
