Common Grave - Dehumanized

Common Grave – Dehumanized
Self-Release - 2006
By Adam McAuley

A cascading barrage of riffs typically overwhelms this work and does well to introduce you to what the band has in store for you. Common Grave has attitude and it shows through quite appropriately. The type of death metal they perform is quite an abrasive one and carries some similarities to Suffocation as there are some grind rhythms to be found beneath the chaos. As with that band, there is the problem of sounding a bit muddy at times and I find Common Grave to slightly suffer the same consequences. They are, however, fairly strong in their approach and make for an exciting listen for those that are interested in the style they perform.

One has to expect a lot of repeated patterns that try to drain every ounce of aggression out of the band. This can be interesting to a certain extent, but gets fairly repetitive after a while. The Suffocation kind of sound is certainly one that appeals to a certain type of listener, however, and they should be able to appeal to fans of the distinctive death metal approach they portray. There’s certainly a catchiness to be derived from this work as they churn out the grooves. The band seem to be enjoying what they’re doing which also elevates the display even if you’re not a fan of the particular style completely.

Enough momentum is carried from one song to the next to craft something special as seen from “Sick on Speed”. Common Grave could intersperse their songs with slightly more interesting moments to create something even more meaningful than is already present. As it stands, Dehumanized is a good but not amazing death metal record that fans of Suffocation in particular should eat up.
