Musical themes on MF?

Have you people dug deep into the music to spot all the themes (solos, chord progressions, re-occurring harmonies etc? I really love this way of writing a concept album, not only the lyrics, but the music as well, is connected, in the way of DT's SFaM.

Were there any big thoughts behind where to put different themes? I mean if they help the story in some way?

- The first one I spotted is the first to appear on the "overture", TAB, starting at 0:05, and coming back later in the track. This theme reappears at 6:26 in BtS, and in a totally different arrangement and much slower.

- Also in TAB, at 2:16, is the same riff as the intro to HAS, but played faster and in a higher key.

- The piano from 0:19 in TAB reappears at 0:32 is WtMF.

Well there are just a few, I suppose you have found a lot more of these than I have...

edit:
1:53 and on in TAB is the chorus to BtS.

No offence dude, but don't you think that's probably becuase TaB is, as you said, the overture? :P

But I do remember hearing some phrases and melodies repeatedly througout the album.

Yes, I know that, but I still love it! But not every band uses that technique actually, as a fan of DT one gets a little spoiled by this though...

The overture contains parts of all the songs that take place in "Mercy Falls" so to speak and in that particular order.
In the same sense that track14 can be viewed as a "backwards overture".

Then there are some themes that are recurring in the actual songs as well, like the one you spotted.

There are plenty more though... :-)

Yeah, I should point out though that the recurring "main theme" if you will, shoots in on a couple of places kinda like a chorus, thus separating the other parts.

So, aside from the main theme popping in here and there, the songs appear in order.

(and it was very painful leaning to play the riffs we had written in different keys to make that bloody overture sound good!!!)

Hey all,

So, with a little help from Lunrob’s first post and of course the big hint Andreas gave, here’s my idea of the parts in the overture “There and Back”.

Part in “There and Back”............Part in the actual song:
0:00 - 0:05 * Intro
0:05 – 0:19 * Main theme
0:19 - 0:37 * W.T.M.F..............Same piano-part from 0:32 – 0:46
0:37 – 0:52 * Unbreakable.........Guitarsolo-melody at 5:17
0:52 – 1:05 * A Day Away.........Part from 2:09 – 2:21
1:06 – 1:30 * Main theme
1:30 – 1:35 * Paradise..............Same keyboard-part from 0:02 – 0:07
1:36 – 1:51 * Fall in Line...........Guitarsolo-melody from 5:28 – 5:40
1:53 – 2:16 * BtS....................Guitarpart behind the chorus at 3:26
2:16 – 2:23 * HaS................... Opening riff
2:24 – 2:33 * Destiny Calls........?
2:34 – 2:50 * Main theme
2:50 – end * Outro

As you can see I still can’t figure out where the nice little piano-part from 2:24-2:33 in “There and Back” returns in “Destiny Calls”. I have a feeling that the part in TaB is some ‘speed-up’ version from a part in the actual song but I can’t get my fingers on that one.

Hi, the part 2:24 - 2:33 is actually still HaS, just with a little additional keyboards over the mainriff.
2:34 - 2:50 is from Destiny calls (the part where tommy sings: I won't apologize...)
Then in the outro, You can hear another small part from the beginning of DC, it's a part of the melody just before the vocal enters.

Thanks a lot for the explanation, Kyrt!

- Now that I know you are reading this thread - Let me take this opportunity to thank you for creating all these awesome melodies on the keyboard and the piano. I just love the tone of your sound. I get the idea that you feel that the melody is always the most important thing within the song. The soft parts, the huge epic parts and the solo's..........I love it all........THANKS!!

'There and back' is just an awesome song. It sets the tone for the album perfectly. It manages to flow even though it is "made off" several songs.......
