So far the likely contenders to make my year end list are Amesoeurs, Mastodon, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, Ephel Duath, and Wolves In The Throne Room. As much as I like the new WITTR, it is likely the first bounce off.

just ordered a few jams for listening purposes.
first to arrive was the firstborn - the noble search. wacky buddhist medal! i need to listen to it again but it's kind of like orphaned land and textures minus the weird howling of the vocalist of textures. it's intriguing but did not necessarily grab me on first run-through. i'll try it again today. soon to arrive: woe of tyrants - kingdom of might obscura - cosmogenesis diagonal - diagonal dagoba - face the collosus amaseffer - slaves for life mena brinno - wicked polly absu - absu architects - hollow crown luna mortis - the absence to be clear, i'm not sure which of these have actually been released in 2009. :O

I've never really been able to get into doom. Except maybe Forest of Shadows (but I don't know if that even counts) / November's Doom / While Heaven Wept. Actually I don't know if any of those count.
Is there somewhere I should start? PS. Has anyone heard the Crimfall CD hither? It's kind of silly. Epic folky metal but with less melodicness than you'd normally expect, I think. Cloudkicker, too - http://cloudkicker.uk.googlepages.com/ instrumental wacky metal, kind of like Meshuggah except you don't feel like your skull caved in afterwards. (both albums are free to download)

I'm listening to Anubis Gate's "The Detached" right now. Pretty solid progressive stuff - similar to Circus Maximus whom I love with all my body.
also: super useful list for all of us... http://www.last.fm/user/gunleik/jour...2009_-_present

It took me years of being into metal for doom to grow on me. And it started with some of the doomish/not-really-doom bands listed above. I'm still not as into it as I am some other genres, but I am starting to get really into sludge as of recent. Baroness especially.

Right. I was referring to Candlemass. I'm fairly familiar with Isis.
I have a Rapture and a Daylight Dies release. I think, in general, it has too much of a downer effect on my mood for me to really enjoy it (when you're like 'bluhbluhbluh life sux ' afterwards, it's not really worth it). I think I've been listening to metal for about 9 years now...I guess if I don't like doom now, I'm probably not going to like it.

Although to be fair, I don't like any of the Candlemass CDs after Nightfall with the exception of this new one.

It's different from Alcest... I don't think I can even compare the two... hah. Neige is a damn genius, I'm excited for what the future holds for him. I really hope he continues to push musical boundaries.

I listened to the full length once tonight, probably run it again a little later. It is very nice. But man, their EP is great too. |

It's a hybrid of genres. Black metal, indie rock, some punk rock, some goth rock a la The Cure, some post rock.
Thanx gaddy for reminding me that there's a new Orphaned Land CD coming out. Can't wait!
