Man, I'm really rediscovering "The Odyssey" these days. It was a great album, and better than its successor in most aspects.

Hey, new guy here. Been a Symphony X fan for a while now, and I've browsed these forums a bit before.
I'll try limit my choices to 2 songs per album. Symphony X: The Raging Season A Lesson Before Dying The Damnation Game: The Haunting Secrets TDWOT: TDWOT Candlelight Fantasia Twilight In Olympus: The Relic Lady of The Snow V : Evolution (The Grand Design) Fool's Paradise The Odyssey: The Turning The Odyssey Paradise Lost: The Walls of Babylon Seven |

In order of release dates:
Dressed to Kill The Edge of Forever The Divine Wings of Tragedy Candlelight Fantasia Church of the Machine Through the Looking Glass Fallen (why did they stop playing this live?!) Communion and the Oracle Egypt Accolade II (I find it to be much better composed than the original) King of Terrors Awakenings The Odyssey Domination (aka King of Terrors II) Paradise Lost The Walls of Babylon Revelation I've never been a huge thrash or power metal fan, so a lot of their speedier songs take the back seat to their more epic, progressive stuff. I still like them, though.

My favorite idea at the current time is that I get a working CD player so I can listen to some... any... anything... Symphony X or other

shop stereo where I always do most of my cranking is toast and a extra 300 is not available at this time.
Desk top is toast Old Kenwood does not pick up discs anymore, soon to be taken to repair shop... which is a long drive this lap top makes music not worth listening too Carvin/SGX2000/Tokai still sounds pretty good though otherwise its XM's Deeptracks over the television which I enjoy I think what Im eventually going to do is get a multi disc changer for the Kenwood in the house and wire the speakers down to the shop because I have been through 2 stereo down there in 4 years, its just a bad place for electronic devices.

Too many good songs to name to be honest...I'll just name my absolute favorites...
Walls of Babylon (song is fucking amazing, heavy and epic) The Odyssey (no description needed here) A Fools Paradise (very powerful song, ending is awesome) The Bird-Serpent War (short but effective and hard hitting) Wicked (pantera feel, love the vocal control in this one - Allen's best)

Could someone point me to a few tracks on V that stand out by Symphony X standards ? I know its good and all but I cant figure out why for quite a few it stands out as their best work.

Evolution Fallen Communion and the Oracle Egypt Rediscovery pt. II Of course, it probably stands out as their "best work" to those who feel that it flows seamlessly, and really has no filler moments.

V is very symphonic, very "concept", very classical in composition value, very much what I used to call "head music"... NOT shop work music. To fully grasp The New Mythology Suite I believe you need to kick back and take the trip, doing so I was glad I didnt do it with head phones on, I may very well have OD'd. I started taking notes but gave up as I became more overwhelmed with the brilliance of the entire adventure and knew notes were pointless. What I would say is that it does have a more laid back nature but is awesomely deep in the process. Russel voice is more on his clean side and when he does get course it is still less than one might have been previously accustomed too. One note I did make was that when I first got into these guys I found it hard to believe that it was one vocalist and even did a double check and search. The various vocal voicings that he uses so often sound like "somebody else" and that stands out big time on this recording. As was mentioned in the other topic his range and on more than one particular song is amazing. I also dont find any issues with the vocal "levels" in the mix, I believe its just the atmosphere of this entire piece that throws those such as myself from "getting it". So while Divine Wings of Tragedy will undoubtedly remain my favorite for its intial impact, The New Mythology Suite finally sank home and blew my mind. I'm glad I finally got the house stereo system back up and crankin. So tonight Im going for the headphones... I might not be back.... ![]()

I don't hate it, but it's far from one of my favorites. Too power-metally for me.

Evolution - awesome main riff - too much power metal chorus - my opinion

I think Fallen is really underrated sometimes, though - I greatly prefer it to Evolution, and sometimes even Egypt. Also, I think we can all agree that Absence of Light and A Fool's Paradise need to be worked into future live performances; these songs are criminally underrated. Absence of Light is so groovy, and would be great live if they could only figure out how to do the backing vocals.
