What is there to do in Houston?

Okay if I come. Which I hope to. We'll see based on the rest of the bands. But. If I do, what is there to do in Houston during the non-concert time. I don't just mean the metal community stuff, but are there any neat 'cultural' things (ya know... tourist traps).

I have only been to Houston once, so someone else might be able to fill us in a bit better. But I do know that, if I have time, I would like to visit a few of these places:
Houston Arboretum: http://www.houstonarboretum.org/
Space Center Houston: http://www.spacecenter.org/
St. Arnold Brewing Co - http://www.saintarnold.com/

And apparently Houston has a lot of performing arts centers/theaters:

Thanks Cheiron - I was planning to ask the same thing soon of the local Houston inhabitants. Since my wife will be there with me, and will probably want to make a mini-vacation of the trip, we would be looking for those can't-miss and must-do sites.

Is there some history around? I could go to San Antonio to see the Alamo. Id that far from Houston? Is there anything else? Sam Houston? James Bowie (known because of his famous knife)?

That's right...you're a history teacher aren't you?

You might enjoy this site then. http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/index.html

San Antonio isn't extremely far...about 3 hours I think. If you do go to San Antonio, you may want to go through New Braunfels as well. http://www.newbraunfels.com/

The Houston Zoo is very cool - It's down by the medical center (Kim - You owe me!!).

Downtown Houston is a really live place now - lots of restaurants (any price range you want) and cool clubs.

San Antonio is all I-10 and three hours if you haul ass. Austin is VERY cool with 6th Street and all (music out the wazoo).

The Theater and Museum District is cool. Museum of Nat. Science, Planetarium and IMAX are fun.

BTW - All this stuff is 30 miles or so from the venue. I'm assuming most outta-towners are staying up north.

My first choice would be NASA Manned Spacecraft Center. Seeing all the big-ass rockets and sights are way cool. This is probably 60-70 miles from the venue!!

For public transportation, try this: http://www.ridemetro.org/.

Looking forward to meeting all of you!!

Chris

Ooh... NASA! I love the museum et al in Huntsville Alabama - It'd be great to check out its sister in Houston.
