Q:To cup or not to cup when growling!? (Putting your hands over the mike so the voice gets more guttural)

I think, generally, NOT to cup...

    Cheers

Well, depends on what effect you wish to achieve. Cupping can give a more distorted sound, which may not be very good when recording, but can sound quite cool live.

Not to be a bitch but :p Death earlier works were plain death metal and their later works were more technical metal with bits of thrash and death metal influences :D
