Amorphis just posted an update on their FB page about 2 hours ago, stating that Niclas has decided to leave the band, over issues with the band's management. It's good to hear that there is no bad blood between him and the band. It is very sad to see Niclas leaving after all this time, and his rock solid bass playing will surely be missed on future albums. However, the band has announced that their original bassist, Mr. Oppu himself, will be rejoining the band, at least for the upcoming shows and festival season. I think this is the best possible outcome for this sad news!

The statements from the band and Niclas are pasted below....

    Dear all,

We just arrived back home from almost an 8 week North American tour that was a great success in many ways.

A humble thank you to all who came to the shows and meet & greets to tell us that we were truly missed last 8 years. Next tour will take place much sooner, that’s for sure.

There are a lot of things happening right now in Amorphis camp but the saddest part is that our dear brother Niclas Etelävuori has decided to part ways with Amorphis. His decision has nothing to do with the band, no bad blood, no hard feelings between us so it is better that you read his statement and thoughts below. It’s really hard to describe the feelings everyone is going through right now, especially when we have worked as a family with him for so many years. People should understand that Amorphis has always been a democratic band and it’s pretty obvious that not all choices can please everyone. Some people don’t get along with each other, that’s life. The focus and all decisions have still aimed for the greater good and only what is best for AMORPHIS. We will continue with our current management as we feel that there is no distrust between us whatsoever.

Even in these circumstances the show must go on, so we are happy to announce that our old friend and original Amorphis bass player Olli-Pekka (Oppu) Laine is going to play the forthcoming shows and festivals with us. It’s been a long time since we played together but it sure is going to be nostalgic and great fun. Rest of the year continues busy as we are now heading to Russia after couple of weeks and from there to Radio Rock (FIN) cruise before the festival season starts. Under The Red Cloud tour will end in September and after that we start to work on a new album. We’ll keep you informed about that later on.

Most of all, we want to wish Niclas nothing but the best in the future and he will always remain as a close brother to us.

    Shine on!

    Statement from Niclas

    Hello everyone,

I've been avoiding hanging on Facebook since it was invented but now I feel it's probably the only way to get my message out as intended so I have to start now.

I'm very very sad to inform you that after 17 years I've decided to leave my duties as bass player of Amorphis. This is probably the hardest decision I ever made in my life. I still love the music and the guys and the crew are still my brothers and I wish them all all the best in the future. There's absolutely no bad blood between us.

The reason for my departure is 100% due to the (mis)management of the band. It probably sounds crazy to most of you, but that's how it is (music business can sometimes be very complicated). I got the guy his job back in the day and now I only heard lies and bullshit for the last many years, I just had enough so I gotta go I can't work or live like that. It is pretty obvious to me that the manager only works for his own best interest not for the bands best interest, and that's not how it should be.
Strange enough for me ”most” of the band still wants to continue on this path so I better find another one.
We all gotta do what we believe in and I don't believe in our manager anymore. I have left the door open if the band would decide to change things.
Staying true to yourself is most important in life and that's what I'm trying to do, you only live once and life is too short for bullshit. I could probably write a book about it but I'll save that for later now I'm too tired and I have to look for a new job.

I'd like to thank all the fans, companies, people I've met and worked with all over the world over the years it's been a blast. I hope we meet again some sunny day.

    Regards,
    Niclas

p.s. Bands never let your booking agent be your manager!!! (just a little advice, that we didn't take)

Time to go listen to Perkele (The God of Fire).

Which do y'all think are his standout tracks for bass?

Standout tracks...Perkele, Death Of A King, Silver Bride (because of his background vocals at the end), and probably the entire AM Universum album. I feel like his bass playing was more prominent on that album than any of the others.

It's hard to know what to make of this. From an outsiders perspective, things don't seem "mismanaged". Niclas mentioned that their booking agent is also their manager, so maybe he feels like Amorphis is worked too hard on the road. Which I have to admit, their tour schedules always seem very....ambitious. I can't think of any other band that tours as hard as they do, they play a LOT of shows. I always assumed that's how the band liked to roll lol! If you look at the pic I posted from the meet and greet, Niclas does look very tired and out of it. Seems as though the rest of the band doesn't have a problem with the band's management. I'm just speculating, would love to hear everyone else's thoughts.

Koivusaari elaborated for the Finnish zine Soundi that it seemed to be more about a personal conflict between Niclas and their manager. Rest of the band don't have real issues with him.

    Soundi article here.

Yep, sounds like Nicu was fed up personally and was no longer willing to deal with Markkasen on any level. The rest of them looked at the situation and thought that with a choice like that it was better in the long run to let Nicu leave than to have to go through the process of rebuilding all of the networks that went through a manager they had no quarrel with as well as find a new manager.

I wonder about how they will fill the permanent bass spot. Oppu can fill in for the short term, but with new Barren Earth coming out and Amo doing as much touring as they do, I imagine that Oppu will have to take time out to support his existing band -- especially with him having done so much on the songwriting front. He's way more heavily invested in BE and Amo would just be a playing gig for him. Can't see him becoming permanent again without them working some stuff out with BE over how it all works.

(I mean it could work...Marko and Janne tour with Moonsorrow, Jón still does his thing with Hamferð, and Sami has his Kreator duties, but they aren't the main writers for Barren Earth and I'd guess that Oppu would have to figure out more of a creative balance -- how much to give to either band. I don't see that being the same for any of the others except, perhaps, for Jón.)

Such an iconic piece of the band that will be missing : (

Good for him not putting up with bullshit any longer, though

This is sad and unexpected. I always thought that after 2006 Amorphis found their permanent line-up and would run that way until the end.
Not sure what exactly to make out of it, but I'm glad there's no bad blood between the guys. I'm sure they will find a suitable replacement, but Nicu will be missed regardless. I hope everything turns out okay for him.

I just checked out an interview with Gas Lipstick, where he revealed he's forming a band with some established Finnish metal musicians. I can't help but wonder if a reunion with Niclas is in the works.
