Whats the deal with this stuff? Ive been doing some research on speakers in a weak effort to get some good ones. I found some Pioneers that weigh in at $9000 a pair and I was like, "FFFffffffffuuuuuuuck me."

But today I was reading some mags that had speakers and other components that put the Pioneers to shame. I mean, shit like $2000 turntable cartridges and $20,000 speakers.

What kind of asshole buys this stuff? Who makes up the market? Are these superhumans able to discern nuances that the musicians themselves dont give a shit about? Ridiculous. Makes me want to just forget it and listen to radio shack specials.

Yeah, it's ridiculously out of control. I need to mod my speakers....or just drop a G-Note on a good pair. Even that is excessive as fuck imo though. I still need a good receiver too.

I'm glad someone else noticed. Each page I turned in these magazines presented some dumb ad for even more ridiculous speakers. I wonder where cost stops being a factor in sound reproduction and starts being a factor in stupidity. You think $1000 is a good mark?

Yeah, I'm really curious about this... my speakers at home are probably going to die soon, but I have no idea what to buy. I'll probably just hit up a yard sale.

A lot of the extremely expensive speaker buyers are studio technicians, whom need the extra clarity in the mixing and mastering processes to ensure the best possible results. The speakers are typically made for that purpose. However, anyone who does not NEED the speakers, and still spends that much, is a fucking idiot. Most, normal, people won't distinguish the quality between the Logitech z-5500 5.1 set and the Definitive Technology ProCinema 60, but they'll most likely take the latter because of its higher price tag.

It goes along the lines of advertisers still ensuring that people believe price = quality, where as in a lot of cases, you can get the same quality out of something much cheaper.

I thought I was awesome when I bought a pair of $100 Sony 3-ways. I've always wondered why they don't sound very impressive.........................it's because they're NOT.

I couldnt disgree more. It's been my exerience over the past 31 years that more expensive = higher quality/better product. There's exceptions of course. I can't imagine how a $5000 Louis Vuitton handbag would be more effective than my $20 Army bag.

Also, these magazines were definitely targeting consumers, not professionals. These audiophile-types are like some creepy cult that no one ever told me about.

I think $1000 is still A LOT of fucking money for a freaking pair of speakers but you can score an amazing pair for that quote. I agree that after a certain point, its just ridiculous indulgence and a "my dick is bigger than yours" pissing contest. I'm sure anyone who owns a pair of speakers that much is quick to jump out and scream how much he paid for them to anyone willing to listen.

Supposedly I can mod my BIC America shelf speakers to sound better than most $900 speakers if I just sent them to this dude. Im just a lazy fucker. I think I only paid between 150-200 for them if I remember correctly and they sound better than most speakers WAY more than that. I just need a subwoofer.

Maybe I'm just weird then. Hell, I the behringer truths while in the studio over the JBL LSR's, which were about a grand more than the truths. They sound pretty much the same aside from a slightly more (not even saying better, cause I've never been a fan of too much...) bass response from the woofers. The on speaker options of the JBL are nice as well, but definitely not worth the thousand more.

On the other hand, my old man says the JBL's sound way nicer, and refers to the truth's as "kraut trash-sound".

Dorian shouldn't you buy some cds before you invest in a pair of speakers?

And on that note I'm off to El Pollo Loco. :dopey:

There is a Bang & Olufsen store about 10 minutes from me. They have this room in the place set up like a home theatre. We were early for dinner reservations with a vendor a while back so we stopped in to kill time. The sales guy had us sit down and he put in The Incredibles. The second that thing started I got the chills. The sound was unlike anything I have ever experienced. If I had the $, fuck all, I would buy stuff like that. It wouldn't have to be the most expensive, but it would certainly destroy what I have now and fall in to the category being discussed here.
