I like Graveland, politics aside. Immortal Pride is my favorite album by them.

Just to clarify, I wan't saying that Arcturus aren't progressive/experimental, just added that I considered them part of the post-black scene. It's more of a movement/group of bands than it is a genre. Post-black are basically bands that have a black metal base and go beyond black metal, so they're basically not black metal at all. Often these are third wave black metal bands who progressed from being some kind of black metal (often symphonic or progressive) to doing another genre. A few bands would be Arcturus, Solefald, ...And Oceans, Fleurety......it's just one of the directions that some black metal have gone in. Another one would be "black 'n roll" which basically turns it somewhere from black metal with punk/rock influences to rock/punk with black metal influences. These would be Carpathian Forest and Satyricon.

Some post-black songs to listen to:

    Arcturus - Collapse Generation
    Arcturus - Radical Cut
    Solefald - Hyperhuman
    Solefald - Pornagrapher Cain
...And Oceans - Intelligence Is Sexy
Mayhem - Crystalized Pain In Deconstruction

And throw in Dodheimsgard (DHG666) in there too. Many of these bands use electronic elements. Some I like, some I do not.

If that's the case, then I may listen to a band like that. I know some of you probably hate them, but what about Samael? They used to be black metal, but they've turned into some kind of industrial-type metal (for lack of a better word!), and honestly their website seems to try very hard to play down their former BM work. Their new work is not at all progressive and I'd be the first one to admit it...but it seems like this still fits the bill.

Black Metal is probably my least favorite sub-genre of heavy metal.

I'm new to Symphony X. I like the rhythms and melodies but doesn't anyone think that the guitarist wanks a little?

Nah. Romeo does play really, really fast--but he and Pinnella both seem to have a pretty good sense of when to STOP.

Well, take the song "Awakenings" for example. Great song, but that first solo comes in I find myself cringing because it's just too fast for the tempo of the song and doesn't really add to the songs musical integrity. Maybe I'm just a n00b.

If you want "wanking", try Zero Hour. But Zero Hour isn't really 'wanky", its just that normal people call 'em that because of their massive instrumental parts and pieces.

About "wanking", Kirk Hammett is one who "wanks" a lot, not Romeo.

That's why I hesitated to mention Aborym. There are a bunch of bands that range from taking black metal and adding electronic drums to it to techno with guitars (...And Oceans - Cypher), that aren't post-black, but Industrial/Electronic Black Metal. I think that's probably where Samael fits, or more just industrial. I don't know them.

Basically, as with any genre or subgenre, there are bands that pull off "post-black" well, and bands that don't.

Edit: VVVVVVVVVVVVVV is right, Aborym are industrial black.

    You're welcome.

That was in an AIM convo by the way.

And so far, I have tested it with Arcturus and Solefald, two major players of the "post-black" movement in Norway.

    I wouldn't consider Aborym post-black at all.

Instrumentation and good song writing is one thing, but just going up and down the fret board at the speed of light when the song is in a 4/4 time signature is wanking.

You have balls to say that in a Symphony X forum. Romeo does play fast, but if you listen to enough of their songs, you'll find that there are a lot of times when he doesn't. Most of their verses aren't fast or complex at all.

dude, stop with the "wank" BS it kills me when people talk about a guitar player "wanking". and since the hell when does playing fast mean you suck, people seem to perpetuate the idea that "if it's fast it's shit". why do guitar players do this kinda crap, and why can't people just leave it alone, and IF romeo wants to "WANK" let him.

Actually, guitar players do take a lot more shit than other instrumentalists, for some reason.

If some guy played a crazy xylophone solo, people wouldn't be like, "OMG WHAT A FUCKING WANKER."

Although I HAVE heard it applied to players of keyboard instruments...just not as often.

I think one thing with guitarists and that term has to do with the movements required to play one's instrument. ;)

keyboards are AWESOME when played right and so are guitars. I don't know why people like to criticize musicians for showing technical skill
