so you play all that stuff (Vinnie Colaiuta, Dennis Chambers, Horacio Hernandez, Mike Mangini, Dave Weckl, Derek Roddy, Virgil Donati, Jason Rullo) without any theory? In My Opinion it's kinda impossible. There's a lot of time changes and jazzy working on that stuff and IMO again you must know little theory to play those things.

Vic Fuckin' Firth. That's what! ... i use 5BNs (nylon, obv cuz thats why the 'N' is there) i've only broken 8 so far this year. I did use the 5BN Extremes, aaaaaaaand no good. they broke quicker than the regular ones. what makes 'em so "extreme" is that they are a cm longer or sum crap like that. i hope they stop making those. for drumline (quints) we're usin the vic firth MT1A mallets. goooood stuff.
NO ONE GET THE ZILDJIAN DIPS!!!!!!!!!! they'll give u blisters real bad, real quick. now if u get them and then take that SHITTY dip stuff off, they are fine, but thats pointless. DONT GET 'EM!!!

I didn't think music theory was specific to any single instrument. I know things like technique, skills, and fundamentals can apply to a single instrument but I'm pretty sure theory applies to all musical instruments.

I don't know shit about drumming, but how are you supposed to play some jazz guy's stuff if you don't know about shuffle, syncopated rhythms, and so on?

Good call. Knowing theory can only help you as a drummer, but theres only so far you can get without it.

Why are you mad at eachother? Seriously, does it really matters if he need to brag with what he can (or wished he could)? Does it matters if he gets angry at you because he would like to be able to play so good himself? I don't really know the norms on this forum, but calling other forummembers "dickhead" and "dumbass" is just ridiculous..

no one could've said it better, Guitardeth. We drummers are a very sophisticated and peaceful race, always eager to learn what a fellow drummer can show us. But, theres one in every group, i guess:(... I was hoping this thread would show the good side of drummers and not make other musicians who read this say "yeah, how much for that drum machine"? and help each other out with certain fills if ya cant figure 'em out.
I, personally, would like to ask if anyone can make any sense out of the fill at 5:14 into Dream Theater's "Take The Time." I know the song was transcribed in Modern Drummer magazine, but that was like the month before i started getting it or something. Its the only thing from Portnoy that i havent figured out ... no exaggeration there. and to bring 2 new words into this thread ... *thanks* for the *help*.

Not to rain on your parade of making yourself sound stupid Xerox, but music theory isn't just about notes. It isn't only about scales, modes, chords and such.

Its about rhythms, time signatures, and techniques as well. If you want to be a proficient drummer, you need to know about rhythms, syncopation, time signatures. You need to know your six strokes, paradiddles and such if you want to play jazz or something jazz-styled. I don't see how you say you could play those other drummers stuff, I don't know who those drummers are that you said you could play that PRauhala mentioned, but they sound like the kind of names jazz drummers would have, so I bet some of em are. :)

I doubt you know these things, since you say you don't know much theory. I don't play drums (I played for a short time, but I don't consider myself any good, guitar is my instrument), but I do know some things. I don't mean to be sounding like I'm out for an arguement, but this has annoyed me from reading your posts, as well as your arrogant posts in other topics here.

GOD!!! i think nobody understood what I said... when i said i knew nothing about theory i meant GUITAR theory and with guitar theory i meant NOTES SCALES and does kind of stuff... of course i know drum theory...

and my posts ARENT arrogant... just because i think your favorite guitar players are just average... that isnt being arrogant, thats is being realistic...
go to the Steve Vai forums... there u can see GOOD guitar players...

this all thing started just because i said yngwie and paul gilbert aint the best... i said they sucked... ive seen guitar players that are WAY better... and also because i said that i could play yngwie stuff after 2 years of playin and all drummers stuff(all ive heard at least)... if u dont believe then dont, but i think every musician can learn something from other musicians.... so please stop attacking me and respect my opinion, just because i have a BC Rich on my avatar doesnt mean im an idiot ok?

Dude, if you can really play that stuff, make a recording. I don't care about the quality, lets just hear you play. Hell, record it with a computer mic direct to your computer and in sound recorder for all I care. Shut me up. I'm sure it sounds fantastic. And for your information, I play a B.C. Rich guitar, so I don't have a bias to you for that.

You said theory, it's your problem for not specifying what you meant earlier, it sounded like you didn't know a thing what so ever when you said you don't know any theory. I mean, if you know theory, wouldn't you know what goes with theory, such as techniques, and rhythms? And please, let me know what this guitar theory is, all I know is music theory.

I never mentioned anything about guitar players. But, if you really would like to bring that up, I find Malmsteen way overrated. But Paul Gilbert is quite incredible, they both don't suck for sure, and sure, there are better guitar players out there. There always is, I bet there are better players than Rusty Cooley and Mike Romeo. Same goes for Shawn Lane and Mike Angelo. I really doubt you know what you're talking about, especially after that remark about how Paul Gilbert tuned his guitar to make arps easier to play, thus sucking according to you. He tuned it that way to make wide intervals playable that would otherwise not be. You didn't notice that it served a purpose and that it was pretty visionary.

If you ask me, from what I've learned myself, you probably haven't listened to yourself enough. You might think you're fingers are fast and can play Malmsteen, but give yourself a really close and honest listen, I bet you have plenty of extra string noise, sloppy technique and go out of time very frequently. I say this because I was arrogant like you before I started listening to my playing years back. Indeed, I would say I could play Malmsteen when I was playing for a little over 2 years (closer to 3). But after giving myself a closer listen, I realized that my technique was sloppy, and I had trouble with time. I then went and practiced with a metronome and recorded myself playing to hear myself better. Give yourself a closer listen, record youself, I bet you'll realize what I'm saying too.

So c'mon, make a recording and stop everyone from running their mouths. lets hear you play some Malmsteen, and lets hear your huge ability on the drums.

    Let's see....

The last time I checked calling someone you barely know 'dumbass' wasn't exactly humble and modest thing to do. :err:

As for the record, I really doubt you play drums.
Oh, and...One more thing. I also thought I could play all of Yngwie's work. Until I tried.

I agree with Dobbit, words are cheap, post clips.
