That's something you should look into before criticising any band. You never heard DT's entire work and yet you claim to know what they are (in a general way) and compare them to Opeth, a band from which you've heard all their work. How can you really know that DT is so much worse than Opeth since you haven't heard all their stuff? You blame the fact that Character has basic song structures and only harsh vocals. On that, I agree, it is the truth. But, one shouldn't do the mistake of judging DT only out of Character and a few mp3s. If you want us to really appreciate your opinion to the fullest, go and get yourself all the DT albums and listen carefully. Then come back and tell us what you really think. Personally, I own all Opeth and DT's discographies and it makes me sad to hear someone say that DT doesn't have musical complexity only because their songs doesn't last an average 12 minutes. Opeth is a great act, but they simply work differently than DT. Prog isn't the only music that carries emotion, you know. One of the prime strengths of DT are the lyrics if you must know. You go on and listen to entire albums like Skydancer, The Gallery, The Mind's I, Projector or Haven and tell us that there is no musical complexity (which btw shouldn't be the basis on which you judge of a band's quality and uniqueness) in them.

I'm not saying that Dark Tranquillity is much worse, I think they're great, it's just that when compared to Opeth they don't stand a chance imo. Opeth just creates such special atmospheres along with such great musical dynamics, brilliant melodies, etc... that there are only a few bands that are really on their level, and imo DT is not one of them.

Well the problem is that albums cost money and I'm not exactly loaded with that, but I'll definitely download some more mp3s in the future.

Well that's not really my argument, a song can be very complex and last only 3 minutes, but DT just reutilises the same riffs too much and almost always in the same patterns. Of course some people like this, but I'm not one of them.

Yes, I realise that, and emotion and lyrics are not the criteria in which I consider the band inferior to Opeth. Although Opeth's lyrics and the emotions their songs invoke are pretty excellent too.

Well complexity was never the only thing that I judge my music by, I just put some more focus on that topic because someone blamed Opeth for having become less complex in their later albums.
But of course, we're talking about something which is dependant on taste here, and everything we're writing here is just our subjective opinions. I never meant to claim that Opeth being superior to Dark Tranquillity is an objective fact, as you can see from the imo after my original post. My second post was merely a response to the fact that someone said that Ghost Reveries was somehow less complex than earlier albums, and that it sucked.

Lol I'm just toying with some people at the Opeth forum. It started off with amphibians then it changed to reptiles, next was sharks, and now I used a supernova to pwn all that came before. Btw I don't have an ego (in the way that you mean it) since I don't believe in free will so I can't believe I am in any way superior through my actions to others. I'm just a piece of organised dead matter that happens to interact with its environment :loco: .

rahvin was refering to your, erm, dick.

Anyway, I am quite disappointed actually, but I simply knew that you didnt know the older stuff from DT, moreover, that you know very little about them. Owning Character and some mp3s is not enough (I hope you understand that). DT started following the verse-chorus-verse pattern with Projector. Please listen to Skydancer, The Gallery or The Minds I, to the whole albums, and youll see that they really did some really complex stuff in the past. The aforementioned pattern started to annoy myself with Damage Done and Character (the music on Projector and Haven outweighs the lyrical structure), because the music itself started to fall into the same line as the lyrics.

As for Opeth, I love Damnation, from their last releases. I dont really like Still Life, and I must admit I listen to Opeth very little lately. Morningrise and MAYH are my favourites.

@dead matter: it's ok, i was half joking (half because big signatures can get annoying, as i'm sure you know). which leads me to my best argument for this thread: complexity in music = opeth; sense of humor = dark tranquillity.

Speaking of movements. Opeth has them all the time. I just flush mine down.
    Think about it.

So what do we learn from this?

Opeth are the best Opeth around, but DT make quite a decent Opeth, too! Not that they ever wanted to be any other band, or lack originality, but for the record, Im saying it anyway.

So tug away the penises, contest is over, no one won

Or maybe it would just stay "penis", since it has a "s" in the end anyways.:Smug:

And let's just not compare Opeth to Dark Tranquillity, since one would perfer black metal to death metal or vice versa, and think everyone else is inferior.

My friend Google told me it's "penes". But "penises" can be ok too. Whatever, as long as we understand each other. ;)

"penes" is even better, but I hope the Italian pasta doesnt have plural then. Thank God for "vaginas", there is no problem at all.
