I did this on the Dream Theater forum, but I didn't get as many responses as I would've liked.

My vote goes to Adrian. I usually find his songs the most interesting, and his solos stand out more to me than Murray's or Gers'.

Too bad you didn't include Steve Harris even though bass is different... I really love their bass lines in some of their songs, but I'll agree with you on Adrian.

Adrian may be a better songwriter, but Dave is the better guitar player.

Although I'll always say that Adrian Smith is the RED BLOOD of Iron Maiden; I've always slightly preferred Davey's more fluid, crazy T-Bar style to Adrian's more complex melodicism. Plus Davey tends to get a little improvisational with the solos live whereas Adrian plays them almost exactly like he does on the albums.

And the guitar solo that Davey plays off of the Live From Hammersmith Odeon 1983 bootleg right after "To Tame A Land" puts him over the top.

Janick's a good songwriter; but soloing-wise he can bite me.
