Fyi: for some reason The Turns by Gods Tower is included as a 1998 release but it came out in 1997.

Edit: and it got The Eerie wrong also.

Runemagick and Aeternus are both on my radar since they both have 1998 songs on the current round of the mixtape. Those are two albums I need to hearken to for this poll.

You're probably right. I haven't seen a year like this afterwards where there were this many truly excellent releases.

This year is huge. I made a list of everything I need to consider for the top 10 and it's bigger than any such list I've made for a previous year. So much genre diversity too, it's not all death/black like many other 90s years.

can I have an extra month

Fantastic year, I was certain I was going to be able to represent my beloved Holocausto de la Morte but other albums kept knocking it down the list.

    1. Solstice - New Dark Age
    2. Solitude Aeturnus - Adagio
    3. While Heaven Wept - Sorrow of the Angels
    4. Running Wild - The Rivalry
    5. Grave Digger - Knights of the Cross
    6. Bolt Thrower - Mercenary
    7. Nile - Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka
    8. Gorguts - Obscura
    9. Bruce Dickinson - The Chemical Wedding
    10. Blind Guardian - Nightfall in Middle-Earth

    HM:

Necrophagia - Holocausto de la Morte
    HammerFall - Legacy of Kings
    Virgin Steele - Invictus
Cannibal Corpse - Gallery of Suicide
Dawn of Winter - In the Valley of Tears
    Exhumed - Gore Metal

If @Dak does this I have a feeling Mercenary will hold the top spot on his list.

So far I've not had a year where there wasn't good genre diversity, looking back over my 90's year lists now (I keep them listed on my profile for easy reference) and there's a ton of doom, power metal, death metal, some grindcore, some trad/epic.
