From this perspective it looks kind of silly
Yeah, pretty much the last chance for them.

Experiment all you want; I'd just want to hear an album that sounds inspired thoughout. Like I posted earlier, Björn himself said they wrote "Wallflower" (my definite favorite on Battles) because they felt the album needed something that wasn't "In Flames Format One - quickly getting to the chorus and stuff".

Lets make a deal. You write in Spanish without grammar and spelling mistakes and I will whip myself anytime that I make a mistake. Do you think that it is that easy to learn another language, even English, with the educational level of the underdeveloped country that is Spain? Compared to the leaders of my country I'm Shakespeare, and I'm almost self taught.

There you have a deceased dictator, the former king, the former major of Madrid, the deceased chairman of the biggest Bank of Spain and the president that convinced GW Bush that it was a good idea to attack Iraq. There's more where that came from.

Now, if you people really cared about my spelling or my grammar then you should tell me where I'm making mistakes so that I can learn. I have no problem being told that I'm wrong. That's the only way to learn.

So what? Bjorn himself also said that. That doesn't mean that he was not allowed to do anything else. So I used solos instead of leads (whip). And I was replying to this statement "I think the liner notes said "additional guitar" though, so he probably didn't play that much." So there's a context to my words.

He needs to rethink his approach to the music. He's been recycling riffs, his and other bands' riffs, for the past two albums. He also needs to create music that matters, not something that is a mere background.

The thing is, Anders and Bjorn have already proven with SOAPF that they can write a good album without Jesper. Yes there are a lot of recycled riffs and wahhh solos on the album, and a lot of clean vocals too, but it still works. How they went from such an impressive album to SC/Battles is beyond me. I can understand if they wanted to experiment with SC, but wtf was Battles supposed to be? An experiment in being utterly mediocre and irrelevant? If so, job done.

Björn has writing credits on 5 songs on Whoracle whereas Glenn only has on 3. It's obvious he wasn't just ''the drummer'' on TJR and Whoracle. It was less on TJR than on Whoracle though. But he did more guitar work than Glenn did on Whoracle in total and that tells you something about his role in the band.

I don't think that I've said something different. Maybe, just maybe, his contribution in tjr is lesser since he was the new guy and he didn't fully know what the band was about. Or he lacked confidence at that time.

How do people here feel about Like Sand?

IMO the best song on the album. Verse and chorus sound like they belong to the same song. The chorus is catchy and while not trying too hard with synths and children chanting. Anders is used appropriately.

The solo is really disappointing though. It sounds like it's a start to a build up to something epic but instead it lasts 10 seconds and just transitions into Anders' whining. How lame.

Like Sand is one of my favorites from Battles. I actually like Anders's performance in that song a lot. Pretty good song, and I agree with you on the solo part. Could be better if that section followed by a good solo.

The only thing I really remember about Like Sand is Anders crying that the whole wide world is against him. Awww.

Weirdly the title track, which I didn't care for at the time, is one of the few I will on occasion listen to now. Battles, Us Against the World (not a good song, just kind of catchy), Greatest Greed and Before I Fall are the only songs from the album that I don't automatically hit skip on.

I forced myself to listen through Battles again yesterday and there were two songs that were actually better than I remembered. "In My Room" has a stupid title but I actually quite like the vibe of the song, and the solo is nice too (compared to the usual efforts anyway). Anders' vocals tolerable and the lyrics actually not so bad.

"Wallflower" was the other one that surprised me. I remember giving it quite a low mark on first listen, but I actually kind of like it. It's like a much improved version of TCP. It doesn't really fit in with the rest of the album but considering how bland a lot of Battles is, that's not really a bad thing.

My overall mark remains at about 6.5/10 for the album though. I still like it slightly more than Siren Charms just because the overall production sounds much better. SC sounds like they forgot to master it before release. Battles sounds sterilised in a lot of ways but at least it has a somewhat professional feel.

Yep it's phenomenal. The deathgrowl he's using nowadays and has been for the last like 10-15 years is way superior to the TJR studio version, it's just sad he rarely uses it at all in studio on songs from recent material.
