If I had been a European, I would have converted to great Islam years ago. Allah akbar.

i just a few days ago read the introduction of a brand-new english translation of the koran
this introduction goes on a pretty long rant about how all the violent muslims are horribly misinterpreting the verses when they use the pasages of the koran to justify their violence

    you know
like how people misinterpret verses in the holy bible to justify misogyny and homophobia

And what translation would that be? I have studied from 12 English translations of the Qur'an. I have three classical tafsirs that interpret the Qur'an for you. And not just any Muslim is allowed to interpret the Qur'an. But the violent verses of the Qur'an all speak of a worldwide violence. Its just like the Bible where the Jews are fight within the boundaries of little Israel. Nay, the violence in the Qur'an perpetuates global jihad. How do you misinterpret Qur'an 3:141?

Noble Qur'an 3:141, The Family of Imran (Madinah Period)

"And that Allah may test (or purify) the believers (from sins) and destroy the disbelievers."

This is taken from the popular Muhsin Khan Noble Qur'an. But lets look at a few other translations of the same verse:

    M.Pickthall,

"And that Allah may prove those who believe, and may blight the disbelievers."

    Daryabadi,

"And that Allah may purge those who believe*, and wipe out the infidels."

*footnote: "Purge them of any impurities that they might have contracted. Trials and tribulations in the case of true believers have always the effect of purifying their hearts and improving their morals."

    Mawdudi,

"and He makes men go through trials in order that He might purge the believers and blot out those who deny the Truth."

    Saheeh International,

"And that Allah may purify the believers [through trials] and destroy the disbelievers."

    Bewley,

"and so that Allah can purge those who believe and wipe out the unbelievers."

    Mufti Taqi Usmani,

"and so that Allah may purify those who believe and eradicate the disbelievers."

    Arberry Koran,

"and that God may prove the believers, and blot out the unbelievers."

    Malik,

"and that Allah may purge the believers and annihilate the unbelievers."

How is this peaceful? Maybe its misinterpreted? Well, lets consult tafsir and see.

    Tafsir Ibn Kathir:

"{And that Allah may test (or purify) the believers (from sins)} It is that Allah will expiate them of their sins if they have committed any, or that according to the agonies they suffered for the sake of Allah, He will raise to higher degrees, {and destroy the disbelievers), who if they become victorious, they will be arrogant and transgressors; the matter that will certainly lead to their destruction, vanquishing, eradication and removal."

    Tafsir Al-Jalalayn (Aisha Bewley translation):

"...and so that Allah can purge and purify those who believe from sins through affliction and wipe out and destroy the unbelievers."

Still not convinced? Maybe we should examine another verse and consult a tafsir that covers the perspective of Islamic Jurisprudence.

    Qur'an 2:193 (Muhsin Khan Noble Qur'an).

"And fight them until there is no more Fitnah (disbelief and worshipping of others along with Allah) and (all and every kind of) worship is for Allah (Alone).* But if they cease, let there be no transgression except against Az-Zalimun (the polytheists, and wrong-doers, etc.)"

    *footnote: "(V.2:193)
    (A) Narrated Ibn 'Umar: Allah's Messenger said, "I have been ordered (by Allah) to fight against the people till they testify that La illallah wa Anna Muhammmad-ur-Rasul Allah (none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah), and perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat) and give Zakat, so if they perform all that, then they save their lives, and properties from me except for Islamic laws, and their reckoning (accounts) will be with (done by) Allah." (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Vol 1, Hadith No.24)."

Keep in mind that both verses I have quoted are from the Media period. Neither of these two verses are abrogated which means they are still practiced. Maybe tafsir will explain what this means from an Islamic legal perspective. That's what Tafsir Al-Qurtubi is for...capturing the verse from a legal point of view.

    Tafsir Al-Qurtubi - On Qur'an 2:193,

"Fight them until there is no more fitna and the deen belongs to Allah alone.
This is a command to fight every idolater in every place according to those who say that it abrogates the previous ayats. According to those who say that it does not abrogate other ayats, it means: fight those about whom Allah says, "if they fight you". The former is the more likely meaning. It is an unqualified command to fight without any precondition of hostilities being initiated by the unbelievers. The evidence for that is in the words of Allah, "and the din belongs to Allah alone." The Prophet said, " I was commanded to fight people until they say, 'There is no god but Allah.' The ayat and hadith both indicate that the reason for fighting is disbelief because Allah says, "until there is no more fitna," meaning disbelief in this case. So the goal is to abolish disbelief and that is clear.
Ibn 'Abbas, Qatada, ar-Rabi', as-Suddi and others said that fitna here means shirk and the subsequent injury to the believers caused by it. The root of fitna is testing and trial, derived from the term for testing silver when it is put in the fire to separate the impurities from the pure metal.
If they cease, there should be no enmity towards any but wrongdoers.
If they stop and become Muslim or submit by paying jizya in the case of the people of the Book. Otherwise they should be fought and they are wrongdoers and only transgress against themselves. What is done to the wrongdoers is called enmity since it is the repayment of enmity. Wrongdoing and injustice involve enmity and repayment of enmity is also called enmity. The wrongdoers are either those who initiate fighting or those who remain entrenched in disbelief and fitna."

This is global genocide! This verse speaks of the global genocide of over 5-billion people on earth today. This what you defend.
