the first time I went to England I thought the Indian food was UNBELIEVABLE.

the second time I thought so for the first half of the week.

then I was like "wait a minute. I've been going to good Indian restaurants this whole time. that's not what a lot of Brits eat." so I went to a pub and got a chicken tikka masala there.

it was horrendous. tasted like it came out of a can.

so while I totally agree with Greg's post, I also want to say that I think we tend to self-select.

although chicken tikka masala at a pub is really not Indian food per se at all, but rather British food.

Make sure you catch a cricket game and get in a fight with some soccer hooligans.

    Yeah it is.

I'm in Scotland but the Indian food is still on the same level of greatness.

don't have time to write too much BUT me and the gf are on vacation and staying with her relatives near manchester. no fish and chips yet but the week is young.

alex, i too just found out that chicken tikka masala was not actually made in india but rather was made by indian immigrants in england so technically it is a national dish and not an import. WEIRD

It depends on where you are. Birmingham has the best. Here in London it's well, average at best.

exactly greg; i have a "curry cookbook" that is divided by cultures (trinidadian, south indian, japanese, pakistani, etc.) and there is a section "british" that includes things like chicken tikka masala.

truth is, most things we view as "indian food" were created or modified heavily by the colonial presence. vindaloo, for example, is actually an attempt to make a portuguese dish (from goa, the portuguese colony) and is supposed to be made with pork. "curries" and whatnot usually include things like tomato, hot pepper, etc. which were not in india thousands of years ago at all! so it's not like chicken tikka masala is TOTALLY NOT INDIAN and rogan josh is TOTALLY INDIAN. everything is just a hodgepodge of influences.

I want a carton of cigs with the pictures of a dead fetus on the box and the packs that speak to you about the hazards of smoking when you open them.
