    Hi,

Kevin Talley (drummer for Daath & Six Feet Under, ex-Chimaira/Dying Fetus/Misery Index/...) just posted a new contest on his website :

    http://www.drummerkevintalley.com/b...e&id=71:roktwittie-module&catid=38:rokstories

This is a mixing contest with drums/bass/guitars DIs (and processed tracks for bass/guitar as well) for a cover he did for the all-time-classic "crystal mountain" by DEATH, where he did drums and a winner for a previous contest of his did the guitars and bass.

Big-ass DI pack on his website (see link above)

"DEATH tribute "Crystal Mountain" Drums by Kevin Talley, Stings by "Guitar contest Feb 2011" winner MURILO MAZZA.

    - Download this zip containing all the stems for mixing. Re Amping DI lines are also included. No Rules.

    - Email a mastered and unmastered mp3 with subject "Mix Contest Sept 2012" to info@drummerkevintalley.com by Sept 1.

    - Please include your full name, city, country, Facebook, twitter, and Youtube ID name in the email.

    - Search youtube for "Kevin Talley Mix Contest Sept 2012" and post your song as a video response.

    - Your video response title should read: "Your Name + Kevin Talley Mix Contest Sept 2012".

    - Your video response WILL NOT APPEAR. KEVIN WILL APPROVE THEM ALL ON Sept 15.

    - DEADLINE is Sept 15 but DO IT NOW!!!

Prize: 3 songs of drum tracks OR a test mix for an upcoming album of mine. Your choice.
    Winner announcement on SEPTEMBER 10."

Here is Kevin's rough mix :

Here is my first attempt (still very flawed, my first time mixing other people's DI with no MIDI/VSTis, and i'm not considering myself good but i like doing it) :

yeah :) 1 GB, gazillions of 24bits WAV tracks...

Wondering how exactly you should export things in a regular session to avoid having a huge file when dealing with X tracks of 24bits audio...

Checking this out now, these drums sound fucking great.

*edit* don't really care to reamp and mix as none of the prizes really appeal to me, but here's what I ended up doing on the drums. Replaced the kick trigger track with a persona sample, the rest is natural. Heavy use of mono room track destroyed with an 1176 and some fucked up parallel compression on the snare/a bit on the toms really helped out.

    sound ace jeff,

how did you get the snare so fat?
is it just from the room mono track?
I'm struggeling with this a bit at the moment.

    here's my drum mix:

If you liked the drums, you should check out the drums Kevin did in those threads, they sound even better (tone i mean) :

Now, what do you guys think about the bass DI ?
I think it sounds kind of horrible :) And i'm curious to hear what you guys can make out of it and how.
    Guitars are cool.

This is awesome, but there are some vital parts in the original drums that aren't there in Talleys version that I enjoyed. And I really dislike the guitars and how parts are changed from the original.

Keep in mind it's a cover so not necessarily meant to be an exact replica (thinking about the guitars mainly here).

I prefer the original guitar parts as well, but this is cool also, mainly because it forces you to deal with all those different guitar tracks and do some volume automation and whatnots.
Having a centered lead guitar that plays throughout almost all the song is kinda weird tho' :)

    just my 2 cents

    sweet job you did !

The mono room track you mention you did by yourself (bussing the existing tracks into a fake room track or something) or you used the existing room track ?

    I wanna hear your full-mix now :)

This, the parts aren't played properly and they were performed like shit.

Part of it is the room, part of it is the parallel compression track (plugin 1176, Decapitator, eq), but most of it is just MHCS compression you're hearing.

Nah just took the original room track (was mono already) and destroyed it with hardware.

Won't be doing a full mix mostly on account of the shitty bass/guitars - I'd have to re-record to be happy with it and I just can't be fucked to spend time on it.
