It doesn't. It's just an observation.
It wouldn't really work in their case anyway.
i love how your definition of "bullshit" fits so well with 75% of all 'prog' bands and their fans.
ps- i bolded the time sig thing because once again, you made it matter when it doesn't.
Zach finally won this thread when he pointed this out, although I'm going to word it a bit differently.
Prog = Genre.
Progressive = adjective.
You can be progressive by delving into a lot of new and interesting ideas with your music, but that doesn't make you a prog band. You can be a prog band and just play Images and Words and SFAM ripoffs.
and rehashing I&W doesn't make a band interesting
it does matter, if theres no discernable time signature in music like hell am i gonna listen to it
you missed the point then. some people have the same logic as you, but they apply "if it doesn't have a time signature" to "if it doesn't have an odd time signature"
see how retarded this kind of argument is? you said it best:
"snobs all round the world kiss his ass and call him a genius"
That's what I meant. You can be called "prog" and just recycle I&W material (which a lot of prog bands seem to do).
i know, just thought i'd make it really clear for the people who don't know lol
perhaps i should take the time to clarify my point.
To me, the word progressive means that the music itself progresses, that there is some storyline or musical equivalant within the music, instead of a verse chorus verse chorus bridge chorus. When telling a story through music, odd time signatures are particularly useful, thus in progressive music odd time signatures are more common than in popular music. although this strays from the definition that some of you guys use, its a lot more useful, think about it, if you call a band that mix turntablism and metal "progressive" because they are the first to do it, and pink floyd progressive based on the fact what they were doing was so far from what everyone else was doing from at the time, then you are putting pink floyd and linkin park under the same heading, two bands who have nothing at all in common, however using the definition of progressive which me and everyone i know uses, this word can discribe bands which have similair features, just like you might describe music as "heavy" or "ambient" or "dark", you could describe the music as "progressive" and it would mean something.
John Cage - 4'33
3 minutes of applause for that.
and its "progressive", its out there, just like linkin park, hes doing something new with music.
I was almost going to click on that link until you mentioned linkin park
Linkin Park = Fail
i can sum it up right here:
anacrucix = progsnob.
wtf are you on about...
Yea I was wondering about that one as well...
OMG, LINKIN PARK HAVE t3h DJz!!!11one
according to the other guys definition of progressive, linkin park are progressive.
I'm going to have to call Stephen Colbert again. STEPHEN!!!
haggard are one of the first bands to use an orchestra in a heavy metal band, and that makes them progressive
so surely, linkin park being one of the first bands to use a DJ in a heavy metal band makes them progressive?
