I am a fly by night fan of Southern Rock. I can certainly enjoy some of it a lot but I can never really enjoy a full album. The Mollys are probably one of my fave bands in this style with some corking tunes in their catalogue. I always look forward to their albums. In the end I didn't like Gods and Guns from Lynyrd Skynyrd from last year. As usual the opening song was absolutely killer and then after that I slowly get bored and the lyrics are a bit too much for me but I don't normally give a fuck about lyrics but somehow in Skynyrd they rib me up the wrong way - maybe I don't understand cause I ain't a yank.

Anyway here we are at the new Hatchet CD. It's the usual story. The opening song rules with thuderning twin guitar riffs and solos. The production on the whole album is great. Phil the singer has a great husky whisky soaked voice. I don't like the ballads in the middle much. The rocking songs in between don't rock enough and are a bit forgettable. Then we get to the final track Justice. Holy Shit!!!! It seems they concentrated real hard on this track to make it as epic and killer as possible. They wanted to try and equal their best ever track Fall of the peacemakers and it is a brave brave attempt which just falls short. But what a song it is in it's own right. Like in "Fall" the song starts acoustic and slow and gradually builds to a huge guitarfest crescendo and has great lyrics. It's not on youtube yet so I can't post a link but I urge you to try the song somehow if not the album. Justice what a song! I'm not gonna say it's worth the price of admission alone cause I can't buy an album just for one song but it's damn close!

Aside from their incredibly cool logo, I am completely unfamiliar with this band. Can you recommend a CD to check out?

Both the first self titled one and Flirtin' With Disaster are stellar releases. Absolutely worth checking out even if you are not a "Southern Rock" fan.

IMO they both are staples in every hard rock / metal fans collection.

What Johan said. THose albums are with the original singer Danny Joe Brown who died a long time ago now. Their newer singer Phil McCormack is great too. Best thing to do is check some songs on youtube like Fall of the peacemakers, Flirtin' with disaster which is just an awesome boogiefied rock n roll tune. By the way if we can turn this into a general southern rock thread then you also need to hear Blackfoot which is Ricky Medlocke's band. Ricky is now in Skynyrd so I guess Blackfoot is finito. You might actually know Blackfoot's greatest hit Teenage Idol. It was actually covered by Firewind brilliantly I might add!

Whoever sung Flirtin With Disaster has the award from me for the most annoying voice in the history of rock. When he sings it sounds like Pee-Wee Herman singing southern rock.I can't stand his voice:puke::puke::puke:

I've heard it... just didn't know who it was.

Indeed. I got through 40 seconds into "Fall of the Peacemaker" before I killed it. Although I dig the Allman Brothers, Molly Hatchet isn't my cup of tea.

While I appreciate johan68 and Fire breath, I unfortunately have to agree with this statement. None the less, I appreciate you taking the time to make the recommendation.

yeah Devil's Canyon is great I agree from the more recent albums. So you guys didn't like the vocals from DJB? Hmmm strange folk! By the way one of their albums "beatin' the odds" was sans DJB as I just found out. Some other dude was singing and he has a great voice too. I don't get how you didn't like DJB's vox though.

It's Jimmy Farrar. He also sings on "Take No Prisoners".

Beatin' the Odds is a pretty rockin' tune also.

Huge fan of this band, and Southern Rock in general. I really like most of Justice, but it gets a litle limp in the middle. Title track does slay...
It all started with reading in Circus magazine that they were a cross between Skynyrd & Nugent. bought the debut record, and have been a fan ever since.

Maybe instead of the first 40 seconds, you should jump 3-4 minutes in to the big jam at the end....it might change your mind.
