Hey guys, I got a call from one of my friends saying they got a 'weird' email from me in the middle of the night with a dubious link being the only text, I guess this happens alot but I've had the same email for over ten years now and never had issues with it being hacked n such. My question is, does just changing your password solve the issue? It's a yahoo account, if anyone wants to know. thanks!

I've had emails and IMs on Messenger from close friends suggesting I try these new diet pills, Viagra at reduced prices etc...

Not too sure how they do it, but if I were to look at your case logically I'd say if they had access to your email then they would do more than just send out spam. They'd probably change your password and look through your emails and see if there's any relevant banking details and things of that nature.

It definitely pays to be paranoid and I would definitely change my password anyway just in case but I think it's just an automated computer that's got your address from the public domain.

Emails are simple its called spoofing the header. IM is fairly simple too if you are using Yahoo IM, Yahoo uses a header system when it sends an IM to someone, you can spoof those with software. Its all very simple actually. i can send an email from any address in the world in about 30 seconds from my web server. All I have to do is change the "from" line in the email, as my webserver allows me to do this :)

Something nasty got into my hotmail and tried to send some .dat file to my entire contact list. Luckily the mailer robot sent them all back, not that it would have done much damage, I only have random people like old bosses and such who I never emailed enough to remember their addresses.

Also facebook reported multiple failed attempts to access my account by someone in Indonesia. I dare say both incidents were the same hacker.

This is very common these days, and this particular "strain" I think it may have really only kicked off this year- some wormed up system somewhere likely has a bunch of contact details from an email between you and your friends, and is firing out all that crap you see.

It seems pretty common, my mom sent both me and my girl an email about viagra the other day. Just change your password and it should stop.

Also if you use the same password on a load of sites, quite often one of them will be compromised by a group of hackers and they'll sell your details on.
