    Hi Guys,

I had some questions in a previous thread about overheads and hi hats that were like 3 to 4 db louder than any cymbal hits in overhead mics.

    Here's a short summary.

    Here's the original thread.
    http://www.ultimatemetal.com/forum/...g-drums-takes-midi-problems.html#post10827184

So I have taken everyone's advise and created a test.

    Original Overheads Only:

You'll notice the hi hat is way too loud. No hi hat mic in this mix down. I feel the cymbals drowns out waaaay too much. I cannot raise the volume on the overheads as the hats will then be too loud.

    *Original Hi Hats
    *Original Ride
    *Original Overheads

    Superior Overheads Only:

This is only superior drummer cymbals, hi hats and ride (Programmed).

Original Overheads Blended with Superior Cymbals:

Here I used the original overheads, hi hats and ride. Only the Cymbal hits are re-inforced with superior cymbals. Basically they are layered.

I prefer the the "Original Overheads Blended with Superior Cymbals" mix because of the space and realism compared to the only superior mix. Also the original overheads only mix does not compare for me though.

Which track do you guys prefer? Also ignore the volume differences between the overheads in the difference tracks.

    Thanks In Advance :)

Would you guys be interested in the multitracks for this snippet to see what you can do with the original drum tracks?

I might be with you on the blended one. The Superior overheads add a little wash to the sound and makes them sound fuller in my opinion. Or maybe the originals give the full sound and superior gives the wash actually.

This was actually what I was trying to say.

Also bare in mind that this was just a rough test. I actually properly mixed it now and it wins hands down to the original overheads. In this instance the real overheads adds fullness as Superior drummers overheads are very thin sounding.

I prefer the original one, but I would blend the ride. Just automate the hats =)

The original has way better vibe IMO. It really helps take away from the "sampled" sound of the shells and keep things more organic.

The originals are best. If you are trying to get a different feeling out of them I have found stillwell transient monster to be capable of pulling some vibe out of washy OH's.
