On my IPOD I rip my cds at 256KBs variable AAC, and it is a compromise between file size (about 100MB per cd) and sound. My guess TC is that your settings somehow changed and you ripped your cds at a lower bitrate.

I'll check that out and see if a bit of tweaking is all I need. Thanks.

So there are two things at play here:

    1. If you want to archive CDs on a server or computer for the purposes of playing back through a home "hi-fi" system you should be ripping lossless.

    2. If the purpose is to simply fill up your portable mp3 player/phone with music than a higher bit rate lossy file should be fine. Lossless files are way too big unless you are getting into a high end portable system (which I strongly suspect is not the case here).

Lossless will sound better but on a typical portable set up I'm certain lossy mp3 would be fine.

Check the bit rate you are ripping at. Low bit rate sounds like total ass.

Personally, I rip my CDs in flac for my Computer. When I want to put some files on my portable device (Sansa Fuze+), I convert the flac files in ogg vorbis with a software. I think with a iPod, you need to use iTunes to fill the device. I don't know if you can manage like 2 databases with iTunes? one lossless and one lossy and convert the lossless files to a lossy format for the iPod?

OK, here's the full breakdown if what I have to work with ripping CDs in iTunes:

    AAC Encoder
    - High Quality (128 kbps)
    - iTunes Plus
    - Spoken Podcast
    - Custom

    AIFF Encoder
    - Automatic
    - Custom

    Apple Lossless Encoder

    - Automatic

    MP3 Endcoder
    - Good Quality (128 kbps)
    - High Quality (160 kbps)
    - Higher Quality (192 kbps)
    - Custom

    WAV Encoder
    - Automatic
    - Custom

So what I need is to figure out what gives me decent sound quality for smaller file size, as currently I rip discs mainly for portability on my iPod.

I'm also wondering if speaker quality factors into it. I would assume not, but what we have right now is a Bose portable speaker we bought a couple of years ago that we bluetooth to the PC. It's sound quality hasn't been all that great lately.

Oh, and to those who asked, I will be getting on to compiling my list of CDs that I'm interested in getting rid of soon. Trying to get over being sick right now.

iTunes plus works for me. As I said above it is 256kbs variable, which translates to a file size of approximately 100mbs per cd. I have 2 160GB ipods, and I fit approximately 14,000 songs on each.

I honestly hope you solve your problems but am glad it's taken you awhile. :) I'm new to the Mac so all this info has been helpful.

Thank you for starting the thread and thank you to all who've participated.

Thanks, and you're welcome, I guess. I didn't intend this thread to be about CD ripping formats, but it's good that it went that direction, since I've learned a lot as well.

I am revisiting the original issue(bulk CD sale) as I shed about 800-1000 classical CD's(keeping my SACD's and hi-res FLAC's) and about 800-900 rock & metal. I have sent 2 boxes of classical to Decluttr so far; for my classicals they have been paying $.30-$2.50(averaging around $1 each). Not much, but it's quick and easy. They pay more for the rock/metal ones(I sample priced a few but have not sent any yet). They have an app for the iPad where I use the iPad camera as a bar code reader, and I can knock out a box of 160 CD's in about 45 minutes so at least it's simple. They pay for shipping.

So you're interested in all of it or just some of it? Let me know. The list is pretty much the same except I've returned The Essential Billy Joel and the Queens of the Stone Age albums to my collection.

Also, apologies to anyone who's been trying to message me late last year. I was so sick and in the hospital so much that I wasn't coming on the forum at all. It may have taken a while but I hope I've replied to everyone by now.

That's a good question, actually. I've been wondering what's reasonable to offer. I definitely won't ask the original price on everything, but what do people usually do when they re-sell? Half price? 1/3?

Also, for future reference, I do have a Paypal account.
