Dragged Across Concrete was super good. Hail Mel Gibson!
Watched Uzumaki last night. Super strange Asian film based on a manga about a town afflicted by a “curse of spirals”
Gory and grotesque in spots. I don’t know what to think about it really. Kind of not serious in spots then BAM NASTY VIOLENCE.
Watched The Irishman this past weekend. Honestly, kind of shocked I was able to, as these days I'm barely able to find the time watch a two hour movie, let alone a 3 1/2 hour behemoth. Just lucky it came to streaming on a holiday weekend, I reckon. Anyway, I loved it. As good as Scorsese's greatest? Nah, definitely not. But it's a good swansong as far as his organized crime films go. Examining the effect organized crime and the violence that comes with it has on those involved as they grow older and begin losing the people they care about makes it a pretty good bookend to his work in the genre.
I know everyone either loves or hates the de-aging CGI, and when I first saw the shot of DeNiro de-aged in the truck I thought "Oh fuck this is gonna be a long 3 hours." But as the movie went on I didn't find it distracting at all and rarely thought of it.
Robert DeNiro is really good and it was great to see Joe Pecsi back and I really enjoyed his super subtle performance. One of the highlights of the film for sure. Al Pacino's is the one that really impressed me, though. There was a little of the OH HAH of many of his post Scarface performances but it worked and was complimented by a mostly restrained performance that reminded me of Michael Corleone in Godfather Part II at times. Good shit.
Overall, one of the best of Scorsese films since Casino. The story was engrossing, especially once Frank meets Hoffa, and it was gorgeously shot. The movie really flew by despite its running time (which is always a compliment from me as far as long movies go, if my ass starts burning from sitting so long it's like being in my own personal hell) and I definitely want to give it another watch should I ever find the time.
Finally saw The Witch, would have definitely made the lower half of my top 10, if I'd seen it while we did the 2015 game. Ralph Ineson was really great in the role of the patriarch, I never really knew he could be such a physical presence either.
Now on to The Lighthouse, which I told myself I wouldn't watch until I saw this one. Also I saw this article about Eggers' next project called The Northman:
The Witch is so fucking good.
I really want to see The Lighthouse, but since I live in the fucking boonies the nearest showings have all been 2+ hours away.
Coming to dvd in like two weeks
Y'all got letterboxd profiles? Haven't used mine as much as I used to, but here is mine:
Been meaning to make one, so I just went ahead and did: http://letterboxd.com/Stoicorum/
EXCLUSIVE: Christian Gudegast (Den of Thieves) and JP Davis have closed a deal to co-write Mafia X for Thunder Road Pictures and Pioneer Pictures. Gudegast will direct a film which is based on his original pitch.
Just finished rewatching Den of Thieves and then I saw this.
i’m gonna watch john wick 3 tonight. you guys can’t even stop me so fuck you
Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion and Tadanobu Asano as Raiden has me pretty hopeful this won't completely eat balls.
@CiG , @TechnicalBarbarity batshit crazy movie. Has a scene with Bruce Dickinson when he was in Samson ( some of it can be seen in the trailer). John Cassavetes says the word sperm a record breaking amount of times
haha awesome, definitely adding that to my watchlist.
Trailer was fucking awesome.
Don't want to oversell it, and it's been a while since I've seen it, but its pretty awesome. Kind of a slow burn, who done it- is it really happening - can't be real. With a 70's horror vibe and a shock twist ending. Goes every which way to the point your not sure what the hells going on ( and i mean that in a good way) then pulls together at the climax. I know its playing on amazon prime if you guys have that.
And yeah i guess the word sperm gets used by everyone alot! But its funniest when John Cassavetes says it
yea... the sperm count was the selling point for me lol
just kidding heh
Is that one out on BR?
It is. Vinegar Syndrome put it out, really good disc.
Holy fuck man, deepfake tech is absolutely insane. Also when he's on the ground getting kicked, "ahyuah uahah argh uhar."
