I think it's sort of interesting that Kemper/Axe FX seem to be the gold standard in most peoples' minds for the absolute highest bar you can set for realism in amp modeling, and they're the inevitable point of comparison whenever new products like this get released. Presumably the reason those units cost so much isn't the time the developer took to make an average individual model, but the hardware cost, product support for a medium-sized firm, labor/manufacturing, etc., plus the fact that those units have a huge number of actual and potential different amp sims. If you have a talented developer like the ones Kazrog mentioned I don't think it's necessarily ridiculous to think that the modeling is similarly accurate relative to the price- it's that it's a simpler product without any physical costs. I might be talking out my ass, but I have no reason to think the much cheaper price point of Recabinet/TSE/whatever automatically means they have to prove they're better than the competition; it seems pretty logical to me when those costs are gone.

that said, I'm going to poop my pants when this comes out because I can't afford an Axe FX/Kemper etc etc

Interesting, I'll have to look into that at some point. A quick and dirty solution that might help a bit would be a stereo chorus plugin set conservatively. There are various spatial enhancer type plugins out there, but I've not played around with them at all.

thanks for the replies Kazrog. I'll definitely buy Thermionik soon. Can't wait to try it. Software amp sims sure have come a long way since I first joined the site in 2006. I remember back when everyone here was using Pods and the SimulAnalog Guitar Suite was the shit if you wanted amp sim plug ins.

yeah the wagner sharp was the first amp sim that sounded decent to me. Sounded 5150 like back when there weren't any 5150 amp sim plug ins.

    @Kazrog, I'm all for underdogs.

What I was saying is that there's a gap between the prices ($79 and €30). Each new amp in Thermionik is a bunch of $. High gain peeps are going to stick to a handful of amps (I think) anyway.

to be fair, the X50 is just one amp where as Thermionik has multiple amps. Plus since I already have recabinet 3 the upgrade price is about the same as I paid for the X50 :)

Personally i would have liked my choice of 1 or 2 amps to begin with, with roughly 19.99 price point for current recabinet 3 owners. Then pay for each additional amp. This is my opinion, it doesnt mean its right. lol

It's strange to me that most of the aggressive naysaying is coming from guys that registered in the past week.
It's no secret that I like Shane and I like recabinet 3 but I don't think anything he's claimed has been outlandish. TBH I think the market speak has been pretty conservative (have you ever watched Steven Slate talk about anything?) and the clips seem to support his claim.
It sucks that everything has to be so adversarial b/c I for one think it's amazing that all these indie dev's are pushing out great new plugins.

So you don't consider this answer a bold claim?
do you really think Thermionik rivals the Axe FX 2 or Kemper in sound quality?
"Absolutely. I wouldn't have bothered entering the amp modeling space if I felt I couldn't improve upon what's already out there."
I certainly do, and I'm sure there are many others out there who feel the same way about his comments, and references to breakthroughs etc... I just hope for Shane's sake he can live up to this hype he's creating!

I second the feeling of being dubious toward the newly registered people being hyper critical of a plugin that hasnt been released yet. Seems like its related to other developers with a lack of confidence in their products OR there are more people than I thought who are so passionate about not actually micing up a real amp that they lurk the internet waiting for the magical solution that makes their guitars sound perfect no matter what the context.

I also dont understand people who are whining about the price of the release. If you dont think its worth your consideration or money dont buy it. If your not sure then you have the option of waiting and listening to clips and insights online after its released. After its released it is still going to cost less to buy than the shittiest amplifier you could imagine.

Im pretty sure most sane people would admit that you can get a really great guitar sound from freeware plugs, kempers, axefx, or real amps. Most of the people who question and criticize probably need to work on their mixing and focus less on the limitations of the gear they have.

The hype?lol you talk like every people on earth are waiting for this release.
If there is a hype is in a bunch of foruns where the news of this product is being posted.

Anyway everyone says this kind of statements, the last one was sturgis, with his impulses and the groundbreaking drum software that by now no one remembers.

Now, I am not saying that shane is lying and hyping his product but if he knew that he didnt have nothing new and something that is not a improvement over the current scene of ampsims, why would he bother in release a new product?

So shut the fuck up, wait, hear and talk later.
