Long ago I try to pick up Colin's snare in style of old BFMV or Funreal For A Friends.
I found some information that it is mix of live black beauty snare with strongly compressed alesis D4 (and or bob clearmountain sample?) in dbx160 comp and para comp. What you think?

yeah the rimcntr and cntrrim alesis samples with a black beauty seem to be his choice for that kind of tone I think.

I'm good friends with Ryan from FFAF, he said Colin took apart and rebuilt a Black Beauty for 2 days before he was happy to start tracking. That kind of attention to detail, plus a single ply head, SM57 on top, and the aforementioned samples will do the trick.

Colin is notorious for this kind of thing. I remember hearing from Derya that when he tracked the guitars/bass for Rise to Remain's LP that he'd have them change strings every 5-6 takes, remove strings that weren't being used, track chords in 2-string groupings (AKA 3 takes for a 6 string chord), double lead lines an octave below and above, etc. In 4 weeks of tracking the guys estimated about 2 weeks of changing strings and a week of tuning with maybe 1 full week of actual playing.

Wow, haven't thought about splitting chords in that manner. Got to try something like that too.

Listen to the end result vs traditionally tracked material and see if you think it's worth it. Odds are you won't.

I mean... it is CR we're talking about

Well i did a phase cancellation test... It seems neither D4 nor clearmountain were used on that record. I also tried the ddrum factory library and various other drum samples with no luck. On Andy´s record´s you can clearly produce phasing by mixing in the D4 sample.

slates snare 17 or 18 are black beauty samples i think as well as the deluxe black beauty obviously. one of those as a starter with sth else blended might work.
the waves ssl channel with cla preset cla snr deep and some clpper/saturater after it might also get you in that direction... but i'm just talking from my memory here maybe its complete bullshit but might be worth a try ;)

I actually have got the samples that were used on the BMFV, FFAF and Fightstar albums. Those were not D4 samples as far as i remember.
