Its not new growling, its the use of Mathias's clean vocals which I think are pretty good. There was alot more growling on BM, but you expect that, as the album theme is about BATTLE. |

I really think nygard took a step up on the clean vocals.. The tracks he layed down with his voice were beautifully done.. could almost bring a man to tears from beauty
but fucking amazing album. i cant get enough of it. Vocals in Varangian compared to Battle Metal is bar none no contest. Varangian takes the cake on that one ![]() Cant wait to buy the real album and have it in my hands.. Having the promo just isnt... real. u know? good music like this deserves to be bought.

I would have liked the album alot more if it wasn't for the new growling present - sounds so generic and flat, nothing like the awesome and original growling we're used to in Battle Metal. --- Quote:

does NO ONE notice the difference between the growling in Varangian Way and in Battle Metal? The growling present in Battle Metal can be seen in the Varangian Way on 'Holmagard and Beyond' and a tiny bit of 'Fields of Gold' I think it is. The rest of the growling has been replaced by a much more Black / Death metal style of growl, which is the equivilant to someone screaming instead of singing (battle metal harnessed the growl more so through rythm and natural singing in a deep tone) and it sounds totally not-turisas. Nygard's normal singing is good and much improved upon, though a little cheesy in some places. And yeah, everyone does keep saying 'but the guitar solo's were done on a violin' ...so what? That doesn't give it the right to sound cheesy and relativly bland in comparison to authentic guitar solo's. If I said the guitars in Burzum's old albums were played by an elephant.. would it make you cringe less and want to listen to the album more? probably not.

![]() Don't know about the cheesiness of the solos to be honest. I've always loved 80's hardrock so maybe I'm not the one to judge...

I absolutely love the new album, for me it easily tops the debut. Can't wait to get my hands on the real thing as soon as possible, especially to read the lyrics. As a hobby historian I especially enjoy the era that The Varangian Way is covering, and I read anything I can find on Constantinople and things that went on around there. That might have something to do with my enthusiasm for the album, but also musically, for me it's perfect.
Some might argue that it's less aggressive and slower than Battle Metal, which I guess it is. Some parts of the Varangian Way sound almost...operatic? That's right up my alley musically speaking, so... I have to say that for me at least, it tops Battle Metal in every way - an achievement that I didn't think was possible, and something that made me register here to say (haven't bothered to do so since the switch from Trolleve ).So here's a beer to hopefully seeing you play live next month in Finland! ![]() |

I dont know why everyone is complaining about a more intense growl??? Seems to me that that would fit the story as Nygard would have intended. I was under the impression that nothing by turisas was an accident and everything had a purpose. Of course I havnt heard the new album yet, since I am not one to download things, but from what I have heard on the medley it sounds way better than battle metal. |
