In "Miklagard Overture", there are the lines:
"The Norwegian of rank In the court of The Prince I was convinced" I was just wondering if anyone knows who or what he's refering to? Just curious... ![]() |

I guess it's a reference to The Varangian guard, Nordmen who served as the elite guardsmen to the Byzantine emperor. All the way from Scandinavia, men joined the Varangian guard. I recall the earlier guardsmen being untrustworthy because of their disloyalty, so the emperor hired the most badass and the best to serve him loyally.
So to my conclusion, that piece of lyrics is about the Varangian guard, guarding the court of the prince, being convincing and fearsome to the outsiders or enemies, trustworthy defender to the people and friends. Please do correct if I remember something totally wrong. |

Well, I have a doubt about the word "PINT" ,I need another word to try to understand that word, because for example in the phrase "I stand up and raise my PINT up high, I can´t understand the real meaning of the word Pint, in spanish is something like "Pinta" but that word is something strange for me, so if you have another word in english or spanish to understand it, please, write it for me.
thanks!!!!! |

@ _Valkiria_ :- A pint is a glass of beer/mead/brew or whatever the vikings had. So he's reffering to lifting his glass of brew up in the air in a tribute sort of thing to the "empty stools".

Hope I'm not twisting them too badly. :/ And the last bit Hakkaa päälle Pohjan Poika! Is a traditional warcry of the finnish Hakkapeliitta's, literally it means 'Strike on, Son of the North!" ![]() |

Sahti-Waari Nyt täyttyy mahlainen malja Tuoppeihin virtaa sahti ja kalja Uusi polvi kun päätänsä nostaa Vanha tapa ei kuole koskaan Murtumaan ei kristityn miekkakaan meitä saa Käymme teistoa ainiaan Nyt laulumme jumalille raikaa saa Siis tuoppinne nostakaa! Tummat pilvet, ilkeä taivas On kaukana korpien kätköissä maa Kyiset pellot, katajainen kansa Luulivat voivansa sen alistaa |

And Finntroll sings in swedish, the lead vocalist being bilingual also, and they've said that swedish sounds so much more troll'ish that it's better for their music. ![]() Quote:

Hello to all, this is my first post in this forum so I'll go on to reply to that question.NorskChick I think the lyrics refer to Harald Hardraada, the Norwegian noble who came to Constantinople along with his fellow Vikings and other Northern men in the same way that the "Varangian Way" describes, following the same route and ended up in Constantinople where he served in the Varangian Guard and soon became the leader of the Guard and a famous warrior trusted by the Emperor and Empress who led many succesful attacks and sieges against the enemies of the Empire. After many years of service he gathered many riches and left Constantinople. He went back to Norway and became the famous king Harald Hardraada.

Warlord speaks Finnish, Swedish AND English? Impressive.
I wish I was brought up bilingual =[. I want to learn so many languages (Finnish, Japanese etc) but my brain just won't take much in. Bah. |
