I was listening to these bands today and I thought why not let all the international fans know about some of the good Ontario Metal bands:
Wetwork (who have a release on Krankenhaus records) www.myspace.com/wetwork Tech. Death thrash with a brutal chick vocalist. Eclipse Eternal www.myspace.com/eclipseeternal Epic Black Metal like Emperor (kinda) Wolven Ancestry www.myspace.com/wolvenancestry Melodic Epic Black Metal I'm seeing all these bands live this summer and hopefully Woods of Ypres as well. enjoy. |

Three great bands there, I definitely need more Tenhi though, as all I have is the airut:ciwi EP. Anyway, on the topic of folk, I'm fucking dying to get a hold of a CD by one-man group called Vali (http://www.myspace.com/valiband). I'd even be happy with a download but I can't even find that.

Simon Dower had some excellent vocals, although I have no idea what he (or Tim Aldridge) is up to nowadays.Recently I've been listening to: Peste Noire - La Sanie des siècles - Panégyrique de la dégénérescence http://www.myspace.com/pestenoire Black metal band from France, an excellent album. One of the members is Neige from Alcest/Amesoeurs although this sounds very different. Sturmpercht - Geister im Waldgeburg http://www.myspace.com/sturmpercht Austrian/Bavarian alpine-folk, ever so slightly tongue-in-cheek. Great variety on this album. Sarah Blasko - What The Sea Wants, The Sea Will Have http://www.myspace.com/sarahblasko Not exactly metal nor underground, heh. Australian alterna-pop singer. Went to see her live about a week ago in a small coastal town, had a good time. Mogwai - Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait http://www.myspace.com/mogwai Most of you probably know of this band, but their newest release (a soundtrack to a recent art-doco Zidane flick) is one of their best yet, IMO. Silencer - Death, Pierce Me http://www.myspace.com/silencerswe The vocals are absolutely messed up but I love this album. You should see the looks on people's faces when you drive by playing this album with the windows down. (Have a listen to the screams from 4:25 onwards in Sterile Nails and Thunderbowels). As much as I also like Shining, these guys make them look positively sensible. And, whoever mentioned Portal... I can't wait for Outre.Last edited by AshDLS : July 27th, 2007 at 02:14 AM. |

The Lord Weird Slough Feg: One of the funnest and coolest heavy metal bands (with a lot of folk elements here and there) to ever exist. They create very elaborate albums that are very smart and compel you to listen to them over and over. John Cobbett (vocals/guitar) is also one of the most unique vocalists I've ever heard. I cannot give a band a higher recommendation than I give them. http://www.myspace.com/sloughfeg
Hammers of Misfortune: This is John Cobbett's side-project that almost matches the greatness of Slough Feg. This band utilizes his vocals as well as female vocals, and they work together very well. Hammers is also a little more folkish (and a bit more experimental) whereas Slough Feg is more heavy metal. All around a great band, but Slough Feg is just too hard to top. http://www.myspace.com/hammersofmisfortune Nebelung: Very haunting and ultimately cool folk/acoustic act from Germany. I found out about them from Negură Bunget's friend's page on myspace and they were a good find indeed. Don't expect anything like Negură, though. http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm...endID=95198262

Check out this list, Pursuit of the Sun... is on it. It's actually pretty good, though of course they miss some stuff, but no list is perfect.

Always Agalloch, and why the hell not!
I was doing some thinking about music the other day. I decided that what I absolutely LOVE is layering clean vocals or sweet clean vocal harmonis. Kinda like some stuff off Against the Seasons, as well as in Ulver's 'Bergtatt', Agalloch's stuff (particularly 'Not Unlike the Waves'). Stuff like that. Thoroughly makes me happy in pants. I like it in a black/death/doom/prog kind of atmosphere. Anyone have some recommendations? |
