Reflecting on this past week of guitar recording in the studio... I had a real feeling of satisfaction today, after having performances of carefully shaped riffs finally recorded for a new WOODS album, riffs of which had first been written as early as July 2007, while sitting on my bed in my apartment in Seoul, Korea, at the very beginning of my year in exile. At the time, I bought a cheap electric guitar to travel abroad with and when I got there, I bought a small Korean made, 5 watt practice amp to allow me to 'plug in' and play. It was quite the humbling experience in many ways. Change was overwhelming and everything sounded horrible. In an attempt to do something to keep me distracted, I just started writing again. Writing riffs, setting them aside. Writing thoughts, setting them aside, too. ...not knowing what would become of those expressions. Over time, a time I hardly remember, the riffs met with those thoughts and words and became new WOODS songs. The thought of this 'next' WOODS album weighed heavily on my mind these last two years, since the release of "Woods III". The constant feeling of needing to be working on it was seemingly always present, always a distraction while working on other things, fulfilling other obligations, doing what needed to be done to 'get by' between albums. And now, drums are recorded, guitars are almost completely recorded, bass soon to be done, two years' worth of somewhat carefully selected personal quotes written out on green recipe cards, soon to be ultimately filed away into a verse...vocal preparation well underway (the car is still the best place to rehearse, IMO). I must have lost all sense of time. A time that once felt nearly motionless eventually passed and two years somehow flew by quickly afterwards. I can't believe we'll have a new album out soon. I mean, I still have much work ahead of me this month, and I will be disciplined with myself enough to remain committed to the work, dedicate my time and put in the effort, allowing no justification for any regrets by the time it's done. It will be the best it can possibly be. Already, what we have meets my standards of expression and kicks my ass sonically with crushing drums and all that low-end chug of Marshall blown speaker winds. You will soon enter a great hall of power and sound that is, WOODS 4: The GREEN Album.
Thanks for reading! DG - \w/ |

We now have half the lead and solo guitars recorded. Still in guitar-land this week, vocals start next week.
One of the hardest parts of that next step of the process (besides deciding what exactly it is that I feel I want to say this time around) is the abstaining from all dairy, spicy foods, beer and coffee (the latter three I REALLY enjoy, regularly) leading up to and during the vocal recording days in order to have the best voice health possible. ...Though, I'm not surprised when I cheat and sneak a beer in there, but only when I really deserve it. I mean c'mon, we're working hard here. Making an album is more fun than shoveling dirt, I'll admit, but there's no such thing as a day off UNTIL the album is DONE! Until then, I feel there's always something to be doing to prepare. This is an especially important album. Thanks to all those who have pre-ordered so far! Please keep it coming! More soon! I hope the cd arrives before it is put on iTunes. I noticed the new Sacrifice last night (!) and an empty mailbox today.

WOODS OF YPRES - Studio Update: I recorded the last of the guitars (...for now) on WOODS 4: The GREEN Album. Today, we took heavy and made it strange and interesting. Like "Whoa dude, this Asian-inspired, drop-tuned, psychedelic, melodic sludge-doom is like...totally killing my buzz...but also blowing my mind!!!! Gimme some more of that, man."
Vocals start next week! DG - \w/ |

In studio, vocals day two: Three more very challenging/'difficult' songs DONE tonight (then again, all our songs are 'difficult'), w/ ultra low Pete Steele (TYPE O NEGATIVE) vocals, 'clean and clear' as well as 'black as night' standard 'WOODS' DG vocals, and a new weapon, some Kirk Windstein (CROWBAR) melodic sludge-singing. All in all, doing our best to give Paul from NOVEMBERS DOOM a run for his American money.

I pulled one of my wisdom teeth out, took ONE Tylenol, sang black metal vocals in the studio SO HARD for six hours that my belt buckle broke apart in my hands...then I pulled another wisdom tooth out. Now I'm drinking beer and eating nachos. If you didn't already know, ALL of those things are pretty metal. Another productive night in the studio, recording WOODS 4: The GREEN Album. A few more songs done, a few more tomorrow.
