Folkearth - A Nordic Poem
Folkearth is a band I've heard mentioned many times and have had quite the trouble aquiring their album. But once I did, I was sure glad I went through the pain.
Before you even listen to the music to know the epicness Folkearth is going for by even just the names of the songs. Each song is it's own epic journey through viking/norse folklore. Sit down, close your eyes and clearly vision the atmosphere created by this album. It truly is something else.
Now listening to your typical viking/folk metal some people expect fast paced loud metal (Equilibrium, Thryfing, Magog, etc). This is not the case at all. Each song is structured to perfectly display the world the lyrics create. There are sparadic moments throughout the album that pick up the pace (Including black/death style vocals) but in no way does it seem out of place. It blends in perfectly with every other moment.
With that said, the electric guitar is most definitely NOT the most stand out instrument being used. There is a blend of so many instruments (And keyboards) that you get the idea of an actual medieval viking band playing music in a dark cold tavern.
Being a lover of acoustics in metal left me absolutely loving each song. "Rhyming With Thunder" turned out to be one of the best viking metal tracks I have heard in ages. I absolutely loved it. The clean vocals along with the slow, beautiful melodies absolutely embraced me.
Other top-notch stand out tracks are "In Odin's Court" (Excellent intro and the chanting makes the song extremely powerful), "Storm Ravens Come" (Beautiful violin work done here along with the mixed vocalling near the end) and "Gryningssang" just for it's absolute joy to listen to.
This album is a MUST HAVE for any epic folk/viking metal fan.
