    Getting A Master That Breathes?

As others have said you need a start with good arrangement followed by recording and mixing and finally mastering. At mastering processing shouldn't really be to save a mix but to add the final few %: TBH if the recording and mix are excellent there should be very little processing at mastering...

    red book master?

Hopefully not too late here... If you are providing a redbook PMCD for replication you should also provide the PQ either as print out or as a file and a BLER print out. With DDPi2 it can be a good idea to check that the replicator is happy to take this as some still will not.

Wide mixes? Can't seem to get it

Yeah - I should have said that I mean when he's doing the mix.

    Differentiating pleasant/unpleasant frequencies

This and for the same reason. Developing critical listening can be really useful. You don't need perfect pitch but it's really useful to have, for instance, a good idea what 3000Hz, 1500Hz, 1000Hz, 250 Hz, 50Hz etc sound like. It will also help develop an idea of how a HPF/LPF is likely to...

Wide mixes? Can't seem to get it

EQ and good balance again. You can also try using the Haas trick and modulating the delay time on the delayed channel.

    Calling all amateur/professional mastering engineers!

    - How has the role of a mastering engineer changed in the last 15 years? In lots of ways. Major one is the increased expectation that our main roles are setting the feel/tone of a track via processing to make it sound like Band 'X' and an increased expectation/demand that we drive up the...

    Mastering/Mixing Books?

Bob Katz's is a must read for mastering imo. You might want to note though that he's working on an updated version, when that goes to press though is anyone's guess. Also some of what he presents as common practice in mastering is more his personal work flow and routines. Nonetheless it's a...

    44 to 48kHz conversion

It might be worth trying a blind AB or ABX test at a friendly pro mastering studio using their high end convertors (ie Lavry, Cranesong, Forsell, Prism, Mytek...) to see if you still hear a difference. If you don't then any difference between 44.1 and 48 on your Rosetta is more likely to be down...

How do experts mix Metal guitars?

Very, very true. Spend time in getting the recording/tracking as good as you can rather than trying to save things at the mixing stage.

Monitor positioning & Desk placement !

Some general comments: The monitors should point down the length of the room. If the room is an L shape then if you can screen off the leg to form a rectangle. Ideally the monitors should form an equilateral triangle with you at the apex. Also try to have them the same distance from walls and...

    44 to 48kHz conversion

I'd convert to what ever your intended final destination format sample rate is. So if it's going to be broadcast 48 and if it's CD 44.1. As to why we use a higher SR than the human audible range, without going on at length it's due to the Nyquist frequency and anti-aliasing in digital.

The Panic Room, Mastering Class 101 #2: Monitoring & Objectivity

Whilst it is possible to master on headphones it's not something that I would do exclusively. We tend to use them more to check certain issues such as reverb tails and some fine detail. If you do decide to master on headphones I'd still recomend that you check translation.
