Which drum room samples for metal ?

What do you use ? In the past I had to mix programmed drums using DFHS samples for a band, room samples sounded cool especially. When I record myself I ALWAYS mic the room, that's what adds the natural vibe to my mixes. I'm currently mixing an album for a band that has programmed drums but...

How much EQ on the drums ??

How much EQ do you use when you're carving out drums to make room for the guitars, vocals, bass etc. ? That's a question I've been asking myself since a long time. I always think I use too much EQ so it starts to sound a bit phasey... On some kick I sometimes cut 15 db in the 100-400 Hz area to...

Still struggling with thrash vocals... HELP, what do you think of this ?

Vocals is where I think my mixing skills are the most limited. I'm trying to get those vocals to fit in my mix (I'm doing an album for a thrash band). This is a sample of the mix with everything including the vocals. I used an SM7 into Vintech pre for vocals, with the following treatment...

    Mixing thrash metal vocals

I have to mix some thrash vocals, they were tracked through an SM7 and they sound cool, but a bit "flat" when listened raw. Performance is cool though. I'd like to obtain a Testament/early Metallica/Exodus... kind of vocal sound. Any tips on this ? I know it's diffcult to help someone out...

    Engl Savage, Marshall cab mix

Hello guys, I'm in a process of mixing a modern but not-so-fast-tempowise thrash metal album. Here is a mix, what do you think ? No toms, no vocals, and leads/solos aren't EQed at tall, I just raised the fader and put a little verb on it, so don't mind all this for the moment. There are...

12 different snare drums - samples, should I require payment for this ?

Hey guys, on saturday I sampled 13 different "high end" snare drums with my gear. Let me explain : the initial aim was to get the best possible natural samples out of those snares and use them in my mixes. No treatment at all, just recorded in a good room and well tuned snares. I used my...

What happened with Invictus Audio Free test samples ?

Hey guys, I tried to download the free trial samples from Invictus Audio by suscribing the newsletter, but no download link. Did you try them ? I'm really interested in this library and would have like to check out one or two snare/kick samples in the context of my mixes before I buy the...

It's very hard to get clear/powerful low mids in metal !

Here is something that remains a big interrogation for me : when listening to my favorite metal productions, I always notice it sounds "thinner" than my own mixes ; I mean thinner but better : the low mids are there (snare, guitars, bass...) but they never clutter the mix. "Professionnal mixes"...

    EQing Marshall G12T-75

I'm in the process of mixing a thrash metal album. I'm verry happy with the results for now, I chose an old Marshall 1960A over my Mesa OS cab to record the guitars because the band wanted something more "old school" sounding. Amp is an Engl Savage, one SM57 track on each side, no ts. I tried...

    B-52 tube amps

here's my reamping of "Rose Of Sharyn", Engl Savage 120 into Marshall 1960A cab (G12T-75), no ts, miced with single 57, Vintech pre. No treatment at all (no C4, no filters...), it's totally raw. What do you think ? It's the 2-tracks version, no quadtracking.

    ADK A51 / A51S experience on guitars ?

Jacob Hansen recently used this mic to reamp the guitars on the album of my band. It sounds great, these mics are ridiculously cheap, I think I'm gonna afford one soon for my guitar sounds. 57 + A51 in front of guitar cabs should work well. Any experience with those ? Samples ?

Bass : to make it tight but big

I just read somewhere that Andy uses a multiband comp on the bass in his mixes. I sometimes do it and it sounds good, but you have to take care about the amount of comp and where you compress to, else it can sound flat. I use the Waves C4 these days and I only compress the 40-250 Hz area. How...
