    RIP Clive Burr

Just got done spinning the first 3 Maiden records. RIP Clive. There was sort of a rolling feel that he had going that I've never heard from anybody else.

The best gig you've ever been to?

Most memorable was probably Iron Maiden on the Brave New World tour.

How many albums have you sold?

175-200, unsigned. That was mostly at shows and through a couple of stores.

Thoughts on the novelty factor in music

I've noticed bands where they've obviously copped a huge amount of inspiration from one or two other acts, but then wind up taking a blend of something else so that it's different enough to be enjoyable without seeming terribly derivative - even though the influence is obvious. In some ways...

    Not listening to metal anymore

I've been listening to metal for 20-some years, and interest waxes and wanes - that's only natural. Most of my new music purchases of the past 5 years have been bands that I've listened to for years. It's been a long time since I found something new that I really liked on store shelves. To be...

    Cancer Sucks

I think that's a great idea. Considering the number of posts, and some of the sheer gold in them, it could be a double album.

    Cancer Sucks

That sucks - he cracked me up on a regular basis.

Anyone here good with car electrical stuff?

See if you can find a schematic or diagram for that car. Did the lighter in that work regardless of whether the key was on or not?

    Woodmen building wood stuff ?

That looks really nice. I don't want you to see a photo of my workbench right now...it's abysmal.

    Woodmen building wood stuff ?

Yeah - just finished one. Here's the build thread over at MyLesPaul.com: http://www.mylespaul.com/forums/luthiers-corner/177708-longest-build-thread-ever-probably.html I need to build a new workbench - or actually clean mine up after the guitar project.

The "English is my 2nd language" Thread

Fair enough. I think the other rationale for "mike" vs. "mic" is that English pronunciation generally favors a short i in "mic", and if you throw an e on the end to lengthen the i, then the c goes soft. If you don't lengthen the i, then you're teasing the Irish and they get all hacked off...

The "English is my 2nd language" Thread

I don't think we're on the same page about what an abbreviation is. I guess if you're going with a very narrow definition, that only allows for the truncation of a word, then you're correct that "lb" is technically an acronym for "libra pondo". At that point, "Dr." isn't an abbreviation, but...

The "English is my 2nd language" Thread

I guess if you choose to narrowly define "abbreviation" according to one particular standard, then "lb" isn't an abbreviation for "pound", even though it is, and has been an abbreviation of "pound" for centuries. As for the rarity of the "k" substitution in abbreviated terms (particularly...

The "English is my 2nd language" Thread

But it technically is an abbreviation of the word "Pound", it's just not a literally shortened version of the word itself in the sense that "Dr." consists of the first and last letters of "Doctor". Examples similar to "mic/mike" used in the article I posted were "bike" and "trike". And, as...

The "English is my 2nd language" Thread

Yeah - English kind has that built in as a default these days. "You" is/was technically plural. "Thou" (the informal singular form) has fallen mostly out of use because the "formal, polite" plural form became so incredibly overused. So, now there are all sorts of ridiculous ways of...

The "English is my 2nd language" Thread

Pound (weight measurement) = "lb" is probably the most obvious one. Actually, here's an article about this very topic: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/01/magazine/01-onlanguage-t.html

Are you talking about using second person plural to speak to individuals, or something else?
