    Underrated Twilight gems

Yeah, I wasn't really sure what to rate Sonata. I mean... it's kind of apples and oranges with the rest of SX's stuff. I'd say the 7 was my attempt to balance between thinking of it as a song and thinking of it as an interlude -- because it works really well as an interlude, in my opinion...

    Underrated Twilight gems

All right, now for TiO. It's a really good, and underrated, album. One of its biggest advantages over DWoT is its consistency: while perhaps it doesn't have quite as much genius as DWoT, its "worst" material is better than that album's. I think I pretty much view them as equals. Smoke and...

    Underrated Twilight gems

Well, seeing as this seems to have become a discussion of DWoT as well as TiO, I'll give my opinions on both. The former is certainly cool, and has some mind-blowingly excellent parts... but even though I enjoy it as a whole, I can't say the bulk of it truly speaks to me. Of Sins and...

    Your last purchase??

I just bought myself Beyond Twilight's The Devil's Hall of Fame and Therion's Secret of the Runes. Along with those two, I also bought a non-metal album (Vienna Teng's Waking Hour).

    MATT BARLOW REJOINED ICED EARTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As in, will Barlow somehow sing for both of them, or will Pyramaze find a new singer (and who)?

    MATT BARLOW REJOINED ICED EARTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sweet!... but I wonder what happens to Pyramaze now?

    Therion

Therion are fantastic. I wish I knew of any other bands that had the same sort of style... but most music I find labeled "symphonic metal" seems to be more the Nightwish variety -- decent, but no Therion. My favorite albums are Secret of the Runes, Lemuria/Sirius B, and Vovin, I'd say. The...

    Worcester, MA Show 8/9/07

I'm glad I went, as it was a cool experience (it was pretty much my first time going to any concert at all, not counting classical and other "polite" sorts of concerts). But it was definitely too loud for me to really want to do again any time soon. And because it was so loud, all of the sound...

    Paradise Lost: Your Opinion

PL is a solid, enjoyable album. It has definitely grown on me since I first listened to it, and probably will continue to do so, somewhat. But I prefer the days when they had more emphasis on the "progressive" and not quite as much on the "metal." And even their more rocking, driven songs of the...

Which SymX show(s) will you be attending? (2 of 2)

I was a little disappointed that (at the Worcester show) there wasn't a single song from V! For shame. Also, the setlist was too conventional -- I would have liked to see them play some relatively obscure song, too (of which there are any number... Church of the Machine, The Edge of Forever...

    Favorite concept albums

Not going to even try to order them... V - SX Scenes from a Memory - Dream Theater Mabool - Orphaned Land Epica - Kamelot Section X - Beyond Twilight For the Love of Art and the Making - Beyond Twilight The Human Equation - Ayreon Operation: Mindcrime (only the first one) - Queensryche...

    Tears

Several songs have done this for me at one time or another (and who knows how many more that haven't actually made my eyes water, but made me edge in that direction...) Here are some of the ones I remember for sure: Iced Earth - Burning Oasis, A Question of Heaven Ayreon - Day Twenty...

Purchases you were really fucking disappointed with?

I don't think I've ever been extremely disappointed with any disk I've bought. However, I was fairly disappointed with these two: Sonata Arctica - Winterheart's Guild: Too... happy and upbeat, I guess. It didn't grab me at all. Recently I've been listening to Ecliptica, though, and I like it...

V - The New Mythology Suite

    1. Most definitely. The only problem is that I had to create a single track of the entire disk in order to listen to it like that (seamlessly) on my iPod. But hey, not a big deal... my iPod isn't anywhere near full. 2. One of the best parts about it, IMO. 3. Yep, but I think I might have...

Songs that sound like other songs... rip offs or not?

This is very reminiscent of one of the parts from Liquid Tension Experiment's "Universal Mind." On the subject of that, I've wanted him to parody metal for so long... why doesn't he??

    Your last purchase??

I was listening to both of these again, and I think there's just something about listening to them on my iPod (as opposed to my stereo like the first time) that changes my perceptions. Because I found myself liking the Adagio a little more, but the Kiuas a little less.

The Official Band/Project/Whatever (yours or anyones) Promotion Thread

Anyone ever heard of Koyaanisqatsy? Absolutely incredible instrumental symphonic metal. Their sole album (so far), From the Yearning to Burst the Perpetual Circle, is quickly becoming one of my favorite albums ever, which is all the more astounding considering that they're unsigned... Here's...

How Did You Discover Symphony X???

Ah yes. My friends and I had a good time turning calculus terms into dirty talk when we were taking that class. Stuff like this: "Last night I rotated your parent function around my x-axis and she integrated me by parts."

    Your last purchase??

Hey, all I said was that I'm ordering them, not that I'm a fan... :P I have listened to both now, though. First impression: the Adagio has its moments, but overall it seems kind of unoriginal, and the singer isn't one of my favorites. It'll probably grow on me, though, and right now I'd deem it...

    Your last purchase??

Just ordered these three albums: Kiuas - The Spirit of Ukko Adagio - Sanctus Ignis Pain of Salvation - Remedy Lane Hopefully, I'll be happily listening to them in a day or two!
