Good shit. I don't often like much that is described as doomy but this definitely hit the spot. My only complaint is that it was too short! Got me through a couple of minutes of the work day and now I'm having to find something new again lol
Griffar - Of Witches and Celts
Melodic, blasting heavy black metal with great songwriting and lots of supreme moments.
I'm becoming a shill at this point but you guys should check out (if you have already apologies) Asphodelus! Along with that new Ataraxy album they're one of the few bands trying to recreate that old death/doom sound, but without turning it into embarrassing gothic metal. Think old Katatonia and My Dying Bride.
They have a debut full length coming out soon:
Really enjoyed that one as well!
And that one. Goddamn I was craving some new death metal earlier. Could have used that lol
I should really check out the two albums they've released since this. Fuck this album rules though.
Vargrav - Netherstorm
This has just continually grown on me. Expertly crafted symphonic black metal that doesn’t forget the riffs. Don’t know of many bands doing this style recently. Takes far more cues from early Emperor than Dimmu Borgir or Old Man’s Child thankfully.
I guess they’re recording the follow up now.
Also, don’t even like Born of the Flickering?
I mean it’s not awful, but I recall it being pretty unremarkable. I’ll give it another listen, though.
This felt very appropriate the last day or so.
