I'm listening to the new Insomnium-- Across the Dark

So far, all I can say is, holy shit. This was definitely worth the wait. My favorite track after the first listen is probably "The Lay of Autumn."

I still much prefer Above the Weeping World, but Across the Dark is a damn good effort, I think.

The production is not as warm as their other albums, and I'm not too big on the clean vocals. Not bad, but doesn't really deserve all the praise its getting either.

I'm still undecided on the clean vocals. I can see that in places clean vocals might sound quite nice with the music, and the harmonization is great, but I think they should've had a guest singer do them, as the singing isn't exactly great. I can imagine how they should sound, though, and I don't think it was an altogether bad idea.
The two opening tracks and the closer are the strongest ones on the album, I think, and The Lay of Autumn is also very beautiful, but the other songs don't stand out too much. I'd say about half of the album is unbelievable and the other half is just... pretty good. Which makes it still a worthwhile album, IMO.
This was only my first listen though so I'll need to hear it a few more times to be able to know what I really think about it.

Duh, that IS a guest singer. Maybe Mr. Friman should've had a go then? :D

I sort of agree with this + Into the Woods has some awesome melodies.

Oh shit, you're totally right. My bad, I haven't been paying enough attention. Yeah, I'd like to have heard Ville Friman try clean vocals. Couldn't be worse than the guy they do have (Jules Näveri). Honestly I think the writing of the vocals is well done and well-placed but I don't like the singing. I think the part would have been perfect with someone who has a deeper, softer voice.

"Lunar Sanctum" is an amazing song that really stands out from the rest of their catalogue. It's so damn groovy. And Khan's vocals are beyond awesome.

Never really listened to much MDB to speak of. A friend lent me this and I really enjoyed it.

I've heard many things ranging from 'fucking terrible' to 'the best thing ever' about them...Are they at all worth bothering to check out?
