Reddit is one of the largest places on the internet, and somethingawful decided to throw their hats into the ring and try to take the [edit: parts of the] place down for one specific reason: kiddy porn.

During this last day the attack took place, most of these sub-reddits were nuked and shut down, but more are springing up in the empty spaces.

Why am I posting this? Because I was actually curious about what your thoughts are on internet vigilantism and the government/public/corporate roles in the handling of these situations.

I'll post the reddit bomb below, which should fill you in on some of the specifics.

    The reddit bomb is below:

reddit [http://www.reddit.com/] is a social website that allows its users to share links to content on the internet and post comments about the links. This enables not only the sharing of content (photographs, videos, websites, and so on) but also the discussion of said content.

reddit is massively popular [http://blog.reddit.com/2012/01/2-billion-beyond.html], especially with young people [http://en.reddit.com/r/misc/comments/nevz9/results_of_the_reddit_demographics_survey_in_pie/].

reddit is split into subcommunities known as "subreddits", meaning that while reddit exists as a website, it consists as the sum of its subcommunities that people can subscribe to and participate in by means of sharing and commenting as aforementioned.

Unfortunately, the reddit community as a whole also harbors pedophiles and distributors of child pornography, including a man who goes by the name Tessorro [http://www.reddit.com/user/tessorro] and runs a subreddit called "preteen_girls"[http://www.reddit.com/r/preteen_gir...er_is_going_through_a_weird_phase_can/c3pxuv8]

The main purveyor of child porn on reddit is Violentacrez, who was the former leader of the "jailbait" subreddit, before Anderson Cooper's report [[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VuMdQRRLoYg&feature=related[/ame]] got it shut down: [http://www.reddit.com/user/violentacrez]

A list of Jailbait (underage porn) forums which have sprung up to replace it that are currently on reddit:
    truejailbait
    gaolbait
    GirlsinSchoolUniforms
    LegalTeens
    niggerjailbait
    Thenewjailbait
    RealGirls
    trapbait

/r/jailbait is shut down now, but the traffic statistics [http://i.imgur.com/jvNpg.png] posted by Violentacrez [http://www.reddit.com/r/TheoryOfReddit/comments/kzlga/traffic_statistics_for_rjailbait/] from its heydays are interesting. The dip in mid August is when admins temporarily closed the subreddit, and the spike on September 30th is when Anderson Cooper talked about it. The numbers after the temporary shut down are abnormally low, as would be expected. But prior to that, they were getting about 30,000 unique visitors each day.

When r/jailbait was open, it had a message on the sidebar asking young girls to submit pics to their jailbait gone wild subreddit, which still exists, and even wants these 'jailbait' girls to get verified before submitting photos. You're also told to "Be respectful. Don't insult the ones brave enough to submit photos / videos".

The owners of reddit know there is active trading of child porn on their forums, and refuse to do anything about it. Further, Reddit's cofounder simply dismisses the issue and blames the exploited children whose pictures are being traded: []

The inaction of reddit's administrators has been a frequent topic, part of that being Violentacrez's shockingly close relationship with them.
Violentacrez's Twitter account [https://twitter.com/#!/violentacrez] seems like a good example of this.
Krispykrackers [http://twitter.com/krispykrackers] (head of advertising and the community helpline at reddit)
Hueypriest https://twitter.com/#!/hueypriest] (reddit's general manager) and
Chromakode [https://twitter.com/#!/chromakode] (developer) all follow violentacrez.
So does Jedberg [https://twitter.com/#!/jedberg] (former administrator),
KeyserSosa [https://twitter.com/#!/KeyserSosa] (former lead developer) and
MikeSchiraldi [https://twitter.com/#!/MikeSchiraldiraldi] (another former developer type).

If you view their past tweets, you'll see that Violentacrez has regularly been in direct, public contact with them.

In 2008, r/jailbait received the most votes in reddit's "Best Community" contest [http://www.reddit.com/r/bestof/comments/7okgl/reddit_awards_best_reddit_of_2008_comment_here_w/], with SuicideWatch taking a distant second, receiving about half as many votes.

Another interesting fact is that Violentacrez has the third highest amount of karma [http://www.karmawhores.net/violentacrez] on all of reddit for submitted links. Reddit can't get enough of the guy.

Are you sick to your stomach yet? The list of child pornography subreddits continues: (all subreddits listed below are not safe for viewing)

    "Preteen Girls"
    "Male Jailbait"
    "Jailbait Junkies"
    "Asian Jailbait"
    "Young Porn"

    Other awful Reddit things:

    A Pedophile's Confession
    A subreddit called "Raping Women"
    "Beating Women"
A subreddit called "Lolicon" (cartoon drawings of naked children)[/url]
A subreddit called "Pics of Dead Kids"

Way to start a discussion Val, by not at all discussing any points and jumping straight to downtalking.

I'll assume you're a redditer, so let me clarify: No one said all of reddit is in on it, but there is a (way too large for what it is) subsection of reddit dedicated to CP. Of course you don't throw the baby out with the bathwater, but to ignore the facts is stupid. These types of subreddits have existed for years, and only after a public shaming did the hosts of reddit actually take action.

Here, have another article detailing the public shaming they had to undergo, complete with links showing how they've hosted kiddy porn in the past and got caught.

Better yet, I'll post one of those links directly:

You can bring up the whole "reddit is a grounds for free speech thing", but unless I'm missing something, free speech has never been linked to sharing pictures of nude minors.

    @ others:
Reddit is a social aggregator, and claims to be a bastion of free speech proponents. They were very large proponents of the internet blackout, and many like to take credit for spreading its awareness (despite the likes of wikipedia and google probably garnering most of the noteriety). What you'll mostly find are played out rage comics, macros, and some other shit. The cool sections there in my opinion is r/askscience

Here is the lsit of what sub-reddits were banned last night:
For those wondering what's been taken down:
    /r/teen_girls
    /r/TeenGirls
    /r/pro_teen_models
    /r/preteen_girls
    /r/JailbaitArchives
    /r/JailbaitVideos
    /r/TrueJailbait
    /r/niggerjailbait
    /r/ChestyBait
    /r/bustybait
    /r/cutegirls
    /r/asianjailbait
    /r/JustTeens
    /r/JailbaitJunkies
    /r/jailbait_nospam
    /r/jailbaitgw
    /r/nudistbeach
    /r/Purenudism
    /r/teens
    /r/Thenewjailbait
    /r/trapbait
    /r/malejailbait
    /r/malejailbaitarchives
    /r/lolicon
    /r/shotacon
    /r/assbait
    /r/preteen_boys
    /r/photobucketplunder
    /r/AngieVarona

Draw whatever conclusions you want from that.

I'll try and grab screens from the redditers themselves who are talking about this later (I've got to get ready for a show right now). Till then however, I would like for my initial questions to be discussed:
What your thoughts are on internet vigilantism and the government/public/corporate roles in the handling of these situations.

Getting rid of actual child pornography is fine and should be done, because actual nude pictures of minors are illegal. 99% of the content in those subreddits however, was not actually pornography and were completely legal. Distasteful? Yes. Illegal? No.

It's pretty obvious that the people at Something Awful who organized this shit are just trolling and using CP as an excuse to attack reddit. It's mindblowing the amount of people like you and even redditors themselves who are buying into this garbage. I wouldn't be surprised to see some reaction from 4chan like a DDoS.

You'd think they'd target actual problematic things like sites that actually have child pornography being posted on them.

SA is fucking stupid for this. Many of the subreddits shut down never hosted nude pictures. I argued with a friend of mine (an otherwise extremely smart, level-headed guy) about this the other day, but he kept just bringing up "lol well what are you dude, a pedo?"

No, I'm not, but I feel the need to dispel a lot of retarded hyperbolic distaste for people hosting perfectly-legal content that is in either poor taste or could be considered offensive/morally ambiguous (at the very most). IIRC, there are (were, now) really good mods on the jailbait/related subreddits that took down anything that was nude, etc. extremely quickly and efficiently. This is shitty, reactionary policy and it's bullshit that it's gone so far.

Another good argument against it: there are people on Reddit who are under the age of 18. Perhaps they want to check out under-18 chicks because, well, they're within their fucking age range. I don't get how that can be considered child porn! No one's being taken advantage of when a 15 year old girl takes her shirt off on a webcam to show her boobs to other human beings, whether they be 15 or 55... and "advantage-taking" is the main reason CP is almost-universally looked-down-upon; it is usually done in the service of morally-questionable douchebags who intend to rope in defenseless children into rings of creepy pedo shit. Sorry, but you can't use that defense if you're going on your webcam to show off to a bunch of kids you know from school. You might be a slut but no one's forcing you to do it.

IN ADDITION, there is a large fetish community of people into 18+ girls who look like they're under age. Therefore, how are we determining the ages of girls posted on those subreddits? Are we fucking ID'ing them all? No, we're not, we're making some real shitty assumptions, riding the slippery slope, and I think it's ridiculous and stupid and a moralistic garbage agenda policy that can fuck off for being incredibly illogical and reprehensible (almost exactly like what these douchebags feel they're campaigning against; ironic, that).

TL;DR for moral crusaders: Girls like attention; girls post shit online to get attention from dudes sometimes. Holy shit. Guys like to give them attention. Mind fucking blown. If you're 5 and don't know about sex or concepts like that and are being dragged into it, it's "child porn" which is reprehensible. Concepts like "minors" = black/white issue (irrationally and dangerously) substituting morality and moral arguments where logic and critical thinking are far more appropriate.

I'd wager that close to 90% of all the jailbait photos online were originally posted by the chicks themselves. When you post personal stuff like that on the internet and it gets spread around that's your own problem and you can't use the victim card either.

I'd also wager that there are a shit ton of victimed chicks out there who will never known x number of dudes spanked it to their photo/video.

edit: To answer Pessimism's question, I think the internet should be treated no differently than "real life" by the police, the entity responsible for the site, etc. There are already laws on the books for child pornography and obviously there was plenty of ways to track down the people who are posting the shit. Vigilantism is basically useless. It's nothing more than a justification to break the law because you're fighting for the greater good type scenario. Don't be stupid and take the law into your own hands, call the police, that's what they're there for.

Maybe I am turning into Dakryn, but doesn't anyone else feel that this could be an attempt to "win" over the internet and make them either accept, or ignore, the “Protecting Children From Internet Pornographers Act of 2011" which would force all ISP's to log absolutely every thing you do on the internet for a full year. This information is then handed over to the government whenever they want it. I'm not seeing anyone talking about this bill, and I'm getting worried that people just stopped giving a shit now that SOPA went away.

Sounds legit. I don't mean that sarcastically. I browse Reddit very infrequently, and I've heard about the jailbait sub-reddit, but I can guarantee no one I know that uses Reddit is a pedo. Every I know that uses it looks at stupid memes.

Major incoming, because I have insomnia and am out of Ambien.

These sections are specifically tagged with "bait", as in "jailbait"; a term that literally is defined as "a girl with whom sexual intercourse is punishable as statutory rape because she is under the legal age of consent."
Now there is a lot wrong with this, especially if we bring stuff up like the COPINE scale; but the true fact of the matter is that you have an entire subsection dedicated to pervs getting their kicks off to children. These were done typically through private messaging, which has been verified as fact. Not only did it occur in PM's however, it occurred in public.
    Here's some proof:

    http://i.imgur.com/rfKTm.jpg

No, the reddit forum was called out because this shit has literally been going on for years and they haven't bothered to stop a single thing or institute practices that the likes any other site (twitter, wikipedia, facebook, or any-other-decent-site) have had for years.

Here, have actual quotes from SA members on why this shit took place:

    -----------------

In this video, the co-founder of reddit uses the "reddit is a web portal" excuse to get out of stating that reddit hosts child porn. Well shit, I guess that solves that. It's not like I could find any other examples that show how ludicrous of a position that is, such as "I didn't give that child a gun! I merely told the child that where a loaded gun could be found!" or "Hey guys, I got this empty lot, yea you can all come hang out, yea whoever you want bring em. I'll maintain it, sell merch about it, and generally keep the lot looking nice and easy to access. What? Do something about the rapists and pedophiles? Woah buddy this isn't MY lot I'm not in charge here."

As for saying "well the girls did it themselves", "it's their fault", and all the other sorts of diatribes... seriously let's drop the victim blaming and slut-shaming at the door. There is also a little thing called maturity, and it comes in a variety of forms such as cognitive maturity and emotional maturity. There are reasons this country has laws pertaining to ages, and although they may appear to be arbitrary, there are reasons as to why we think a 21 year old is different from an 18 year old (who is also radically different from <gasp> a 16 year old!)
Furthermore, the onus isn't on the one being photographed, it is on the viewer: http://books.google.com/books?id=9b...age&q=depiction of a minor 2255(2)(E)&f=false

    ---------

The real funny thing about this whole thing is that the majority of reddit is fine with what happened and what SA did (http://i.imgur.com/HicnS.png -just one example). They didn't paint the whole of reddit as a porno hub, merely the bait sub sections; the ones who started posting about the whole of reddit being tarnished were the neurotic nutjobs and trolls who were creating a feedback loop of ire and spite.

    THANK YOU.
I actually agree with your point quite a bit. It's just unfortunate that bureaucratic red tape makes these things take far longer than they should. It's even more unfortunate that in many instances agencies ignore things like this due to numerous reasons, some as simple as funding or underemployment. I will disagree with the statement that vigilantism is useless; instead I will mention that it can be a hell of a lot more dangerous though - specifically though for what you mentioned: an assumption that some morality supersedes the law (which is exactly what took place with this whole SS/Reddit thing). A good question though is what does one do when the proper authorities are not interested? I've already listed the complaints of a few redditors with displeasure that CP had stayed up well after the initial reporting, and there are also general complaints you can find with others on similar subjects. Hell, I had a terrible time just getting the EPA to accept our (my coworkers and I) own testimony that the auto place we worked for was illegally dumping chemicals everywhere!

Everyone knew that as soon as SOPA "went away" (I prefer the term hibernating, because it is coming back) that it would return under a new spiffy acronym or it would be included in another bill that is ironically named after something totally american like the patriot act, or after a court case like citizens united. The thing is though is that after the whole Megaupload debacle, the government itself has proved there is no need for SOPA or PIPA. I think the real question now is will the public stand up to the reincarnation as fiercely as they did the first bills?

The majority of reddit are total losers, just like everyone at SA. We all basically use the sites for stupid memes and - in rare cases - actual information. What's funny is most people don't even think that both sites share members... as if internet users could actually belong to two sites!

Question: Even if something that is generally considered socially taboo, do you think moderators (ex: Unknowns and V5 for example) have a moral (read: not legal) obligation to censor or remove content - specifically things akin to what has been discussed?

V5 had a good/accurate rant, and I agree with CC.

There is a moral obligation to NOT remove things unless they are outright illegal and/or harmful.
