What song from what band do you think has the best metal riff you've heard?

Right now I just can't get enough of the intro/main riff for,
"3 Days of Darkness" by Testament

    well

we just decided to play Megadeth's Symphonies of Destruction as a cover song. That riff is pretty damn cool. Simplistic but very effective.

    Embodiment - Carcass

    For Victory - Bolt Thrower

    Cowboys from Hell - Pantera

Man on the Silver Mountain - Rainbow

Where Dead Angels Lie - Dissection

    The End Complete - Obituary

hmm, quite a mix in there!!

My favourite riff ever is the playout riff on "The Mouth Licking What You've Bled" by Meshuggah
It's an intense piece of fast polyrhythmn - the guitars and the drummers feet are playing in 9/8, whilst the rest of the drums are in 4/4.
As Meshuggah are complete Gods it's a true polyrhythmn - at the end of a 64 quaver measure they have to slip in an extra beat (as 7*9 = 63) to make up the bar.
The resulting feel of the music slips in and out of sync in a way you feel you are following until the extra beat is slipped in, when it COMPLETELY DESTROYS YOUR MIND!!!!!!

    Meshuggah ROCK!

    My favourite guitar riffs:
Shawn Lane - West Side Boogie (the one with the synth-brass)
    Scott Mishoe - Domesticated Problems
    Allan Holdsworth - Road Games

If you are searching for godlike riffs, listen to Mercyful Fate or King Diamond.

all time favorite would have to be Into the Void by black sabbath.
A more current favorite is the main riff of D.N.R. by Testament... but there are so many.... damnit unfair question!

There are so damn many awesome guitar riffs out there, but I am not going to mention specific songs, but bands that deliver killer riffs.

    Iced Earth
    Children of Bodom
    Rhapsody
    Symphony X
    Primal Fear
    Psychotic Waltz
Racer X (Paul Gilbert is the guitar god)
    Vanden Plas
    Silent Force
    Gamma Ray

...the list goes on forever, but those mainstream riffs, or what I call mainstream riffs get old very fast. But, for mainstream metal riffs, I would say the best would have to be Megadeth, rust in peace, other than that, there is not really anything else mainstream that catches me. I am not a big Megadeth fan, just happen to like that one cd, but by far not nearly as much as the aforementioned bands in the above list.

No one mentioned the killer riffs on At The Gates' "Slaughter of the Soul" and "Terminal Spirit Disease". My all time ATG favorites would be the main Blinded by Fear riff and the chorus riff to Under a Serpent sun.

In Flames' Behind Space has a few badass ones. So does Jotun, Episode 666, Ordinary Story, and Upon an Oaken Throne.

People covered megadeth (rip) / metallica (rip as well) already.

Kreator can pull out some good stuff. Listen to their new cd "Violent Revolution" and you'll hear some good songs.

Callenish Circle's "Flesh Power Dominion" has good shit too. Track 4, called Take Me Along has a very badass 12/8 riff.

    The list goes on...

Best riffs in my opinion are:

    1) death - Sound of Perseverance - "bite the pain" riff at 0:40
    2) Arch Enemy - Wages of Sin - "ravenous" riff at 0:13
    3) Entombed - Morning Star - "I for an eye" first minute or so is a great riff
    4) Nevermore - Politics of Ecstacy - "The Seven tongues of god" riff at 0:12
    5) Nevermore - Dreaming Neon Black - "Poison God Machine" riff at 0:59
    6) Kalmah - Swmaplord - "Hades" intro riff
    7) Opeth - Still Life - "Serenity painted death" riff at 1:27
    8) Carnal Forge - Please.....Die! - "Hand of doom" riff at 0:19
    9) Nightwish - Oceanborn - "Devil and the deep dark ocean" intro riff
    10) Bolt thrower - Mercenary - "No guts, No Glory" intro riff

those are probably my personal top 10, but there are many others, and it's all what sounds good to your ear.
