Bonus points for recommending bands in this style that aren't black metal based.

Some good recommendations here so far, though I've already listened to about half of them. Frantic Bleep and Atrox are both quite good, imo.
That Sculptured song has some great riffs. I've heard a lot of praise for Sculptured though I've never listened to them before. Where should I start?

Their last album, Embodiment, is pretty goddamn amazing. I would start there and work your way backwards. It's the project of Agalloch guitarist, Don Anderson.

Dog Fashion Disco - Kind of like Mr. bungle

Maudlin of The Well - Kind of jazzy

Diablo Swing Orchestra - Swing metal

    Unexpect - Wacky

Estradasphere! Alot of their stuff isn't really metal, but hell it's just awesome.

cannot stand Diablo Swing Orchestra or uneXpect. Both bands are one trick ponies doing something wacky for an album or two, and then they're gone. They're all flash and no substance.

    :bah:

If sap had requested non-metal, I definitely would second Estradasphere. Absolutely phenomenal band.

Black metal put through a "what the fuck is this" filter. I think the album art speaks for it all. The band features Kutcheck Gorealis who has ties to Finnish black metal band Hail.

Those tracks are pretty good, but neither one was all that weird, at least compared to Abigor or Silencer.

These guys suck but can be pretty amusing. ^

Btw I'm assuming you've heard Sunn O))) and Boris already.

I have Black One. Can't get into it, though.
