Not a fan of the direction they're taking with the new song. I hope it's just for this one song and not the entire album!

Yuck! the song "Havoc" started strong, but quickly failed..... It doesn't even sound like the Circus Maximus I've grown to love......Not digging the over-modern vibe. The distorted vocals ruins it for me. Never thought I'd ever say that about a Circus Maximus song.... :(....The first song is "okay" not looking good so far.... We'll see.........

I listened before I read your comments. Thirty secs into the song, and I was sure the chorus would come on as "The Beautiful People, the Beautiful People . . ."

While I am not pushing the panic button yet, I think there is cause for concern. The Weight, while enjoyable, sounds like something they left off of Nine and Havoc is just plain bad (I gave it another shot later to see if I was being too harsh). This is only two songs, but the album only has 9 songs so we have more than heard 20% of the album at this point.

WOW! Havok is horrible. Truly sounds like they are trying too hard to make a Marilyn Manson song.

I was expecting the worst after reading these comments, but I really didn't find Havok THAT bad. It reminded me less of Manson but more of Adrenaline Mob (I know...most people on this board HATE Adrenaline Mob). My only problem with it is that the vocals aren't nearly aggressive enough to pull off this kind of song...you need "Angry Russ" for the full effect. I'm a fan of Circus Maximus, so buying this new one is a no-brainer for me....it's kinda nice to see a band try to expand their horizons a bit and not play it so safe. It may divide some fans, but it also shows a growing band.

Damn have they become Sellout Maximus? Meh, I'm not too bothered by it as I was already turned off by Nine anyway. Architect and Last Goodbye were the only two songs that I could even stand.

I didn't mind "Nine" so much, I thought it had a few decent songs and one awesome song, But yea I'm pretty much done with Maximus. They are incredibly talented, I just don't like the modern and overly poppy direction(the first song) they are taking their music these days... I'll stick with Seventh Wonder. I have a feeling their new one will kick all kinds of Ass.......

Pages reminds me quite a bit of Deadsoul Tribe ... kind of Tool'ish.

I'm going to reserve my judgement until I hear the entire CD... One thing I like about CM is that each of their CDs have been different and unique. I like their diversity and willingness to spread their wings and try different things.

Well listen to the album right now. Like the Dream Theater latest cd this one will disappoint a lot of people, very pop for my taste, like listen to a different band now. I don't feel the energy in some of the songs(sound generic and boring to me) and what bothers me the most is that this band is talent enough to do better. Maybe is time to change label so they can refocus and stay to their roots. My 2 cents. Troll start in 3,2,1...

This album is too pop oriented for my tastes.

I agree about the "pop music" comments. I have a feeling this CD is going to get lots of bad reviews. Some of the music even sounds "average"....The band has the right sound however they want and whatever makes them happy, but hearing this is kind of like watching Michael Jordan play a below average game of basketball on purpose, It just doesn't seem right...... Save the average stuff for the average or below average musicians.

Three songs from this and each one is not really like old CM. I wonder what Frontiers head Serufino thought when the band delivered this modern stuff. The Weight is ok but the other two are atrocious. Not even gonna listen to the whole thing, I don't see the point at the moment.

Let me preface this post with two pieces of information 1) this is after 2 listens, so things might change 2) Nine is my favorite album by them and I don't really like the DT worship of The 1st Chapter

Hey, do you like plodding, sparse mid-tempo songs? Then Havoc is for you. Given my love for Nine, this album is a disappointment. It is not that the album is "not heavy" or even pop, it is that the song writing seems lazy and lacks any immediacy. Again, it is not about how heavy or complicated it is, these song have no real direction and no desire to get there quickly. Honestly the the last four songs all run together for me. And they are reusing riffs and chord progressions from the last album.

Others are saying this is too pop, I disagree because I would have much preferred punchy short pop songs like "The One" from Nine, Where a song like Loved Ones takes forever to just get going. Not since Dream Theater's Six Degrees disc one have I thought an album needed such major trimming. There is no reason some of these songs need to be 8 or 7 minutes, they would work much better as shorter more simple songs. On Nine the longer songs seemed effortless and felt much shorter than they were. I imagine the fans that do love the prog metal side of the band from the first two albums are going to hate this album.

I am really hoping this is a grower because I really want to like it and there are some really good songs and moments on the album. But honestly it seems like the real follow up to Nine was Terramaze's Her Halo.

I still prefer the "1st Chapter" over "Nine" any day....Yea, there were some definite DT influences, but they did it so very well that it didn't matter. I think there are prog metal bands that are much closer to a DT clone than Circus Maximus ever was. Plus, I think the 1st Chapter was heavier than DT EVER was.
Yea I know, the more complex songs can be exhausting to play live due to frequent time changes and complexity, but Circus Maximus did it so very well that it was easy to miss when they abandoned that approach. "Prophecy" to me is still one of the best Circus Maximus songs ever written. You get heavy, complex and one of the catchiest choruses they have ever written. Nine had a couple of songs I really liked, and many average songs(in my opinion), but it wasn't too bad.

I agree with you though about the new stuff...it's horrible.........

Nice song....kinda reminds me of some of the "softer" Dream Theater stuff on Octavarium. Really good vocals, and the guitar solo here is fantastic. Yeah, Circus Maximus isn't quite as "heavy" as they once were, but the stuff I've heard so far is still first class.
