What are the best and worst metal albums of this type? More often than not, I think that they fail to live up to the pre-release hype, but there are always exceptions.

For me, I really enjoyed Engram by Beherit. It was a new sound, but a welcome album that was definitely a good musical direction and one of the best black metal albums in years.

Off the top of my head...

    Autopsy - Macabre Eternal
Angel Witch - As Above, So Below
    Satan - Life Sentence
    Morgoth - Ungod

Were all phenomenal. Morgoth really caught me by surprise. Had zero expectations but their early eps and full length were awesome annnnd it was being released by century media. It's like they decided their fans were right and went back in time and recorded this instead of Odium and whatever the fuck that last abomination was before they originally broke up.

Yes to Beherit, Autopsy, and Satan. That might be all I can honestly that has really impressed me from comeback/reunion albums.

    Beherit, Burzum, and Satan.

I was particularly impressed with Belus; at the time I was expecting it to suck horribly.

The first two plus At the Heart of Winter are cool. I don't really enjoy much aside from that though.

Their other albums are fine, really. I actually enjoy them a lot more these days than ever before, but I'd still rather just throw on Pure Holocaust any day.

Pure Holocaust is definitely their pinnacle. Anyone denying this is lying to themselves.

it's ok but i was hoping for more given the promise of their 'classic' material.

I think the only legit release is Manilla Road - Atlantis Rising, but even then it's not "great" just a solid album.
