Garbage like Heafy metal? at least on doom metal you won't find such brazen riff/vocal plagiarism.

The Last Spire is excellent. Monstrous guitar tone. Cathedral after the Statik Majik EP is pretty wonky but then they came back strong with Endtyme which is one of their best albums. The VIIth Coming is also a great album.

System of a Down counts as a real metal band. At least from what I've heard from them so far, I think it's unfair to pigeonhole them as "nu metal". How is a song like BYOB not metal?

They are not "nu metal", but they are not metal at all. They are "alternative" rock with some very occasional metal element thrown into the mix. They were lumped with the other nu metal bands mainly for their breakthrough's coincidental time and sharing stage with such bands.

BYOB is a full blown metal song as far as I'm concerned, it has all the ingredients. I guess you can say they are an alternative rock band with some metal songs.

It's 1 song - and not entirely metal either. For a band to be considered metal, the majority of their work should be metal, which doesn't happen in this case.

I agree that the majority of a band's work should be metal for them to be considered metal, but I disagree about that song not entirely being metal.

Sabbath Bloody Sabbath has a jazzy chorus with non distorted guitars, but it's still fully a metal song in my opinion. I can't even think of anything on BYOB that is not metallic.

    The Chorus.

SBS is a metal album from start to finish. The fact that many metal albums feature non distorted or even non metal sections doesn't mean those albums are "less" metal, it's a matter of songwriting. Ulver's Bergtatt has, like 1/3 of playtime which is not metal, yet it's a full blown black metal album.

SOAD songwriting is not metal oriented, despite featuring distorted guitars, some fast passages, some chugs here and there, even double bass or thrashy drum beats. Grindcore in its pure state is not metal, yet is abrassive and heavy as fuck.

BYOB has chugging from start to finish.

And Fluff is a metal song? I agree that SBS is a metal album, but it has 2-3 non metal songs.

And I agree that heavy/abrasive doesn't always equal metal.

SOAD has plenty of metal songs. Probably at least a third of any of their albums consists of overt metal riffs.

Chug doesn't equal metal. Most nu metal bands chug yet they didn't write metal songs or metal riffs. Also, besides the chorus, there's a section after the 2nd chorus that is more punk than metal (the one with Daron on vocals).

As I said, SBS is a metal album, despite having some non metal elements, even songs, since the whole thing IS metal. Burzum's HLTO is a black metal album, even if the last track is instrumental ambient stuff (around 1/4 of the whole album btw).

Then clearly it’s not a “full blown” black metal album, given what you just wrote. Bergtatt is a black/folk album.

SOAD is pretty metal a lot of the time tbh, but I’m not a fan. They have that song that rips off the I am the Black Wizards riff.

without a doubt, people who dont want to refer to them as metal/alternative metal really have some other feelings that are stopping them from admitting it.

pretty much this. I was about to start linking dozens of songs but fuck it.

What I meant is that Bergtatt is a metal album and there's no doubt about it, despite having extended acoustic sections, it's still pretty much metal. Not only because the metal portion of the music, but due the nature of the whole songwriting.

I do enjoy plenty of the SOAD material, but I can't call it metal when clearly isn't the case. SOAD has some metal elements in some songs, some albums, but they have never released anything predominantly metal. They have some metal influences, but that alone is not enough to call them a metal band.

They also are the best band of the whole bunch of bands that were tagged as "nu metal". Mudvayne probably follows, with later Deftones.

The Sound of Perseverance is not Death Metal.
