Alright, in Feb. I'm throwing back the clock and going to see Thursday perform a 10th anniversary show of an old album that I loved back in the day.

Anyways, I was checking out the other bands on the bill and an opener and the headliner don't interest me (cookie cutter crap), but one band, Animals as Leaders, showed some promise.

Mainly cause they seem to not have an lyrics and the music is somewhat interesting.

Guess it's one main guy, Tosin Abasi, who plays a "custom 8-string guitar".

Seems like quite a bit of technical wankering, but the more I listen the more I kinda get into it.

Sooooo....anyone into this group or music?

My theory is that this band wouldn't have been nearly as successful as it is if Tosin wasn't in Reflux (whose singer runs Sumerian Records, Pantheon Booking, and manages Animals As Leaders). The dude's writing style is pretty much exactly the same as Bulb's.

    Definitely dig them

They were on that tour package with Dredg a few months ago opening for some crappy band and watching Tobin live is something else

They are due through south florida again in a month or so as an opener again and I definitely want to catch it

No offense, they are no CANVAS SOLARIS and like AS stated this band got somewhere being who they are and who know. however, live i heard Navene of Animosity is on drums. so that is a plus! it's not a bad record by any means though. i enjoy it.

Yeah I mean, nothing on there hurts my ears or anything, but I think in the small pool of djenty type bands that exist right now AAL just doesn't wow me overall. Animosity ruled. Shame they broke up.

    I need Glenn's picture...

    Got Djent?

This band has become one of the leading djent bands as well. Them, along with Chimp Spanner and Cloudkicker, are the two predominant instrumental djent bands out there.

The interesting thing with these types of bands are the sheer volume of people exploring with the instrumental djent sound. For the most part, they all sound the same; they recycle the same song over and over. However, I'd say Animals as Leaders were the pioneers. Chimp Spaner and Cloudkicker both put out great stuff while sounding somewhat different as well.

Its fun seeing some of these djent bands pop up on the forum in positive light, despite the looming hatred toward the genre. Sure, the name of the genre is pretty stupid (yet surprisingly accurate when describing what the genre sounds like), but the scene has produced some catchy and talented material.

Cloudkicker has been doing some really awesome stuff over the years that is quite over looked as far as I know
