I'm guessing your friend hasn't heard very much extreme music and just hears that it is extreme without recognising the seperate elements in the music. I can't comment Fiction as I haven't heard it, but an obvious thing is Character is alot faster. Damage done is also more melodically driven, introducing more soundscapes and less 'chugga chugga'. The vocals also sound different, DD being more classic melodeath and Character being really harsh and more aggressive, emotional and maybe a little less musical. I think the songs on damage done are also filled with more refrains making the structures a little more complicated and less typical than on character which sticks more solidly to verses and choruses, and even though there are some great instrumental sections in character, they're a little more predictable than on Damage Done, where sometimes the drums will relent and let the keyboards and guitars take the spotlight.

there's alot more, but they're some of the obvious ones I'd say. I'd also say even though character is a little more organic, Damage Done seems alot more soulful with genuinely more emotive arrangements and musicality on show. But that's probably just my opinion.

As for differences, I second KC about Character being faster, and that is propably the most obvious difference. The sound on Character I feel is more of an wall, threatening to overwhelm or fall down upon you with an massive assult of different instruments. On Damage Done the instruments are kept apart more and arn´t allowed to blast away all together that many times.

    Good luck preaching :)

Now i became quite confused... What´s the difference between a refrain and a chorus?

All of the records totally rape. Just each of them rape in their own, special way.

Chances are, he either isn't familiar with melodic death metal, and isn't able to pick out the individual instruments, or he is just trying to be a prick. He is most likely just trying to be a prick, in which case he should be ignored.

Quite a bit is different, really; lyrical themes, song progression and structure, keyboard synths and their function in the songs, wall of sound vs. individualized instruments, overall production quality, the speed of the songs, vocals...

Noticing the differences will probably require becoming more familiar with the music, as most people just hear screaming and incoherent noise when they hear more extreme forms of metal, and nothing you tell someone like this will help much if it all in getting them to really notice and appreciate the complexity of the individual songs and the various nuances between them.

Your buddy is right. Certainly there must be some slight differences between each album, but when compared to something like 'The Gallery', the last three are about as different from each other as the Olsen twins are. Are there any songs from those three albums that would sound out of place if they were moved to another one of the three? I don't think so.

But hey, no big deal, most bands are stagnant like this. It's just DT's brilliant progression over their first four albums that makes it more of a disappointment in their case.

    ^Yep.

Although replace "ignored" with "hit repeatedly in the face by a lead pipe".

I really dont think that those 3 album sound similar this much! First i dont really like dd but really like character and Fiction.Vocals, guitar, keyboards doesnt sound the same!Maybe Character and fiction are more similar but not enough to pick a song on those album and change it! No song on Character can be move to fiction or DD.

    imo
