Quick question, does anyone have any suggestions on what settings to use to get a good Opeth distortion sound with a Boss DS-1 Distortion Pedal? Pretty happy right now with the Bass/Mid/Treble on my amp right now but I'm currently just using my amp's distortion (and it's not a very pricey amp) because I haven't figured out the right settings on that boss pedal for Opeth's sound. As it probably varies somewhat, I'm mostly into playing GR and BWP songs.

The DS-1 is really too much of a fuzz to be useful for getting that sound. The fact that it only has one tone control doesn't really help things. Try picking up a digital modeler, and use the mesa setting. If you don't like digital tone, try one of the tube overdrive pedals from EHX or tonebone.

I found this pic of his pedalboard. The distortion control settings are the knobs on the bottom left. Keep in mind that Mike uses this board for all of his distortion and has his actual amplifier set completely CLEAN live! (notice in the article that the gain knob on his Laney head is at zero!)

The best thing to do is use your ears, though. They won't lie if you really listen closely enough!

    Here's the pic:

P.S. You can pick up a Boss GT8 like Mike's used in good condition for right around $300.

nice find Roadking! I quit using pedals like 5 years ago and just stuck to my amps distortion and clean w/ reverb, never found a pedal I actually liked.

Nothing wrong with pure tone, man! :kickass:

If you ever get the itch to try another overdrive/gain box though, please consider the Xotic BB Preamp. It completely slays every one of the numerous other pedals I've owned, although the Maxon OD808 comes real close with an Analogman.com Silver Mod!

Don't take my word for it... check this dude out. Andy Timmons has some of the absolute sickest fucking tone I have ever heard in my life!

You know the position of the knobs on that GT-8 probably have nothing to do with the distortion settings he's using. The patch is already saved, you can turn the knobs all day and the sound won't change.

I know, but just glancing at where they're set, and judging from having played Metalzones/DS-1s, etc., in the past, that would probably get you somewhat close, depending on your amp's eq settings and guitar. Although I do admit that for high-gain applications in particular, I've really never been interested in getting ALL of my gain from a pedal and really have never run my rig that way.

For the record, I'm not personally a huge fan of multi-unit floorboards like this one, but it certainly seems to work for Mike, and the OP was specifically wanting to cop that tone, so...

No excessive amounts of distortion is needed.

True enough, but believe me... I'm old school, not a scooped mids, over-saturation guy at all!

Lower output pickups, warm power tube soak brown sound with a slightly overdriven clean boost is where it's at for me!

THIS is what I call tone...
