No, I meant $12 is the cost of seeing a movie only if you don't buy any of the food. But I agree, it is only worth going to a theater as a social outing, as the movies are just as good at home on DVD.

ok this 2 min trailer makes it look a lot less silly than the 30 second ones on tv. dunno if i'll make it to the theater, but i am interested to see it now that it appears to be more than Independence Day minus will smith.

I will be seeing this in about 3 hours. I'll report back. I hope it's a good one.

I got to see a free screening of this on Monday. The main character is hilarious! Won't spoil anything though.

Yes! I'm not normally into scifi, but I thought it was good. Everyone else that I was with (more into that sort of thing) really loved it.

Oh, I get it. Movie theater food is fucking disgusting, I usually sneak in something from outside. Except at the Sundance theater, which serves fancy sandwiches and beer.

Try sneaking a fat burrito into the theater some time. The perfect movie food - no looking down!

Yeah, movie food is usually terrible, and bitch expensive.

I quite like frequenting the cinema on my own, it's quite relaxing.

    I'm still excited.

only movie ive gone to alone was watchmen because my jerkass friends that i was saying, 'hey lets go see watchmen' to went and saw it when i was at work  then we all went and saw it a second time a few weeks later

going alone isnt really that different, its not like you're talking to anyone during the movie anyway. still, i doubt i'll find the motivation to go alone more than on rare occasion.

So Bryan Singer is making a BSG movie. :err:

But the sci-fi event I've been looking forward to most is James Cameron's AVATAR.

Yeah, but it's a complete re-re-imagining, and I'm sure it'll be terrible. I can already feel it.

    Avatar will probably be excellent.

There is a renovated 1920's era theater (complete with a Wurlitzer organ and intermissions) in downtown Palo Alto just off the Stanford campus. It shows movies from the 60's all the way back to the silent films. Tickets are currently $7 and they are usually for a double feature, so a good 4+ hours of movie. I'll go to that one alone as I often can't find friends who want to go see Spartacus or North by Northwest.

Are you kidding me? Spartacus is one of my all time favourites, Kubrick was a true master. Olivier is amazing, especially in the scene where he admits he's gay through cryptic allegory.

As for North By Northwest, it's my favourite of Hitchcock's.

    You need better friends.

"My robe, Antoninus. My taste includes both snails and oysters. "

And yes, I need better friends. There is a screening of Lawrence of Arabia in the original 70mm Super Panavision format and they all meh-ed me. WTF?!
