I tried listening to them in 2003, but my disappointment with Opeth's Damnation (it's good, just not what I was wanting to hear at the time) really turned me off to the band, since it just seemed too similar to me and I wasn't in the mood for "mellow" music at that time. So, I was bored out of my mind, desperately trying to find something new that wasn't all of the genres that I can't stand that are the most popular today and decided to give them another shot. And I'm so glad that I did. It also seems like Steve Wilson's work with Mikael Akerfeldt had more than a slight influence on him, as there are some truly "Opeth" like moments on the Deadwing and Fear of a Blank Planet albums.

For me, this is a band I have to be in the mood for, which is not very often. But when I am, they are very enjoyable to listen to. There's no denying the talent and creativity of Steven Wilson.

Stupid Dream and Lightbulb Sun are their best albums.

I will follow anything Wilson does! Have you heard 'the raven who refused to sing'? It's fantastic. But as said above, you have to be in the mood for the music.

Spent a lot of time listening to them back in the "old days" - agree with Shpongled about listening when the mood hits....one of my favorites when I'm in that mood is "Stars Die"....lots of Pink Floyd in this one:

I figure I'll put this is this thread:

Check out Distorted Harmony. The Utopia Ep is nice. A good musical band who's a little on the proggy side but well thought out.

I have everything from The Sky Moves Sideways through Fear of a Blank Planet. Excellent band if you're in the mood for something like that.

Lately I've been getting my proggy fix from

Yeah, posted about Leprous when Bilateral just hit. It got shit on pretty hard around here for some reason, but I thought it was one of the better releases for that year, and certainly more entertaining than Opeth's latest at the time.

About Porcupine Tree though; I've listened to the entire discography, and I doubt I'll listen to much prior to Stupid Dream all that much. The reason In Absentia, Deadwing and Fear of a Blank Planet are so easy to get into for me at least is because it's not just non-stop mellow. There's a lot of rock and even metal dispersed throughout.
