For someone who is unversed and interested in doom, what are some good albums/bands that would be "ambassadors" for the genre?

Start with Pentagram, Saint Vitus, Trouble and Candlemass and go from there.

Definitely Candlemass (Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, Nightfall, Tales of Creation). For some more unorthodox epic doom, check out While Heaven Wept.

Also, if you want to try some funeral doom, cook-ta has been educating me. Here's a sample of Skepticism. They're fucking awesome:

Everyone says they're doom, but it feels so weird calling them that. They seem to have more stoner and sludge influence, imo.

Saturnus is a nice segway into the really sludgy stuff. You could also use a few tracks from Shape of Despair.

Thanks for the suggestions. Been on a thrash/death kick lately, soon as that wears off I am digging into these.

Not a fan of Witchcraft, personally. I think there's much better stuff in that style. Also check out Rituals Of The Oak for some really good new Australian traditional doom.
