Well, to put it short: A label having the licence to re-release a certain album in certain territories doesn't mean that they have the right to put individual songs from that album on a compilation. Two different things. If C.M. easily could have included songs from the first 3 albums, they would have done so.

I would've been very surprised had there been any Osmose-era songs on the album. The tracklisting is pretty much what I expected: a safe selection of catchy tunes from each album, showcasing the most accessible side of the band (Focus Shift, Terminus, Misery's Crown, Lost to Apathy, Final Resistance, The Treason Wall, The Wonders at Your Feet, ThereIn, etc).

While I think it's really nice to see a couple of songs that require a bit more attention from the listener, like The Lesser Faith, Hours Passed in Exile and Not Built to Last, they are underrepresented here in my opinion. Where are songs like Inside the Particle Storm and Nether Novas? I doubt the people at CM even considered them.

That said, I think it's a good introductory selection for newer fans - if they like these, there's still plenty of great songs to be discovered on the actual albums. Like most old-timers, though, I'm thinking of passing this release (unless the completist in me strikes again).

Ah all right thanks for explaining that :) .

Thinking about it a bit more, I'll wait until there is a US release or buy it here. The Cynic box was quite expensive and there are a lot of albums coming soon too, so this can wait. Also, I'd rather save €€€ and buy some rare DT release on e-Bay.

Didn't C.M. re-release the first 3 albums? If so, I don't understand why they couldn't get those tracks on a "best of" album.

In any case, C.M. ought to put a * next to the words "best of" unless they're going to do it right and put songs that span DT's career. Or, they could call it, "the Best of DT When They Were on C.M."

As Niklas pointed out in the very part you quoted, the music business just works in mysterious ways. What might seem like common sense to us, rarely is so in the world of music business. They obviously didn't have the rights to publish those songs outside the re-releases, as silly as that is.

I'm happy as long as they can release the Milan DVD with the old songs intact (as I recall that almost caused some issues on the release of the previous DVD).

Yeah me too, I'd be surprised if there are some problems with that.

As I wrote - it's two different things. Most likely the contract states that the licensee is granted the right to re-release those albums in their present form and nothing else. If they wish to exploit the songs in another context (like a compilation album), they'd have to purchase those rights exclusively from the original label.

C.M. re-released the first 3 albums in the US only. For Europe, the "The gallery" and "The mind's I" were re-released by Osmose, whereas Spinefarm re-released "Skydancer".

To clarify a bit - nobody claims that this is a career-spanning and ultimate "best of" album. The "Manifesto" idea is simply a sampler series with the purpose of giving a quick and easy introduction of the bands to a new audience. If it can make us some new fans, I'm happy with that. If the time comes for a real standalone "best of" album, we won't agree to doing it without including the early material, even though it'd require additional work and money to get the rights properly cleared.

nothing about this 'best of', I still ask the question, will it be released in the USA?

Fantastic, I'm actually happy to hear this because I have the distinct feeling that other bands wouldn't give a crap. I think it does go without saying (of course I'll be saying it anyway) that these "manifestos" are not being marketed towards the kind of person that regularly peruses the Dark Tranquillity message boards.

I really want to bring up the new Laethora but I'll bite my tongue (I'm anxious to hear it).

    Yes, I agree with that. Maybe someday we'll see a true Best-Of :) .

@ La Rocque: I receive that list too, and even though the Manifesto releases were nowhere mentioned, I'm sure they'll be released in the U.S.. Just be patient ;).
